Event Details

I'm getting my ride in gear this Labor Day, as I knock out a good chunk of my 500 mile goal in one day by going from the northern point of the Des Plaines River Trail (DPRT) to Higgins Road on the southern point and back. Looking for folks that are near the trail to ride on Labor Day during the course of the day with your jersey/shirts on so that we can provide each other with support. Whether it's 1 mile, 10 miles, or 110 miles, let's have the trail jammed with GCC jerseys!

My course will start at Russell Road at around 6:30 a.m.; figure about an 11 mph pace with a lunch break in there (I'm eyeing Superdawg in Wheeling, since it's not a long detour off the trail).

Of course, this is all trail permitting, based on river and flooding, but let's hope it's all dry and clear sailing by September!

Hey Jeremy, sorry we missed you guys this morning. But my husband and I did get out later and ride 30 miles on the DPRT. I knew I would not be able to do the 100 miles Hope you guys are safe and having a good ride.

No worries. Glad you made it out and logged some miles. Finished up my 113 miles at 6:00 p.m.; I was heading back through the beginning part of the DPRT around 4:45/5:00. Did see a few GCC jerseys and shirts further south on the trail, that was great to see!

Hi Jeremy,

I am just wondering when you figure you would get to Higgins Road as you then turn around and head north for lunch in Wheeling?

I live in Wheaton and wondering if this ride is too far away.

Hi Rachel, I'm hoping to hit Higgins right around noon, maybe a touch earlier. Hoping to get to SuperDawg in Wheeling between 1:00/1:30. Hope you can join for a bit.

Looking forward to the ride tomorrow! Looks like the rain should hold off, but we're a go rain or shine. I'm aiming to arrive at Van Patten Woods on the north end of the Des Plaines Trail around 6:15/6:30, with departure from there no later than 6:45. I'm only aware of one other rider joining me at that point so far, if you are planning on starting with us, please reply to this post so that we stick around for you. I know there will be some folks joining up at various points on the trail; again, this is very informal, just a chance to get out, log some miles, and jam the trail with folks in GCC gear! See you in the morning; Ride On!

I've been averaging in the mid 11's on longer rides, so that works well. If the trail is dry/dusty, it's usually adds a little bit of speed. Are you planning on meeting at Van Patten Woods at 6:30 Monday, or will you meet up somewhere else on the trail?

Are you planning on going the whole distance on the trail? Would be about 90 miles with the lunch stop towards the southern end of the trip. If not, that's fine; feel free to turn around when/where you need to.

I will try to meet up with you around Independence Grove. I live near Grayslake and can ride from home to Independence Grove via a variety of paths/roads. I won't be able to do 100 miles in one ride but will do somewhere around 25.

Sounds good. I should be passing through Independence Grove/Casey Trail connection around 8:00, assuming departure from Russell Road a little after 6:30. Hope to see you on the trail for a bit next Monday!

2 weeks from today we'll be loading up the DPRT with GCC shirts and jerseys! I'm looking forward to it; especially when the VERY early forecast is showing partly cloudy and mid 70's for a high. Rode the northern part of the trail this weekend, was dry, dusty, and fast! Also was a good time test for me getting to Van Patten Woods and "Mile 0". 6:30 will be a good time for those riding with me from Van Patten south; gate should be open by then.

Speaking of that, if you can just respond to this post if you are planning on departing "Mile 0" with me that morning, that would be great. Just so I have an idea of how many people to be waiting on; and if everyone is doing their own thing but on the trail that day, that's fine too. The goal for this ride is to get as many GCC shirts/jerseys on the trail that day as we can and get some miles in for our monthly goals.

Looking forward to a great day in just a couple of weeks!

Sorry to jump into the conversation--off topic.

Has anyone else had trouble finding rides in Illinois? My "find rides" is not working and I am afraid I am missing out on some opportunities posted!

Can any of you tag me on rides if you see one in Illinois? Thank you! Rachelstoughkuligin

No worries. If you click on the group rides tab on the main GCC page, and then scroll down from the map, it should show a list of rides (mine is sorted by closest to my zip code), which includes dates and times.

Just over a month away. Really excited with the interest in packing the trail with GCC riders on Labor Day! I edited the starting point, if people want to start at "Mile 0" of the trail, but you're not close enough to bike there to get there by around 6:30/6:45, you can park at the trail (limited spots), or there is a TA at Russell and Frontage Road, and there is a paved trail along Russell that leads right into the DPRT. Looking forward to a great day on the trail and seeing lots of folks sporting GCC gear! Please reach out if you have any questions!

Update - plan is to still start around 5:30/6:00, but I'll be starting from my house riding to the DPRT, should arrive around Russell Road entrance (Mile 0 of trail) by 6:30 and will work my way south. I plan to ride down to Higgins Road (IL 72), and then turn around and head north. Will stop at Superdawg for lunch (Dundee and 45) on the way back, which will be around mile 70 for me. My total for the day will be just over 111 miles. Hope to see folks out there with their shirts/jerseys on for the kids!

Is this paved for a road bike, or more suitable for a Mt. bike?

The vast majority (95%+) of the route will be crushed gravel, so definitely a MTB or hybrid would be best.
