  • Date: Saturday, June 1, 2019
  • Time: 9:00 AM - 11:00 AM
  • Location: 7575 North Picnic Lane, Houston TX 77007, United States

Event Details

We’ll do our first #GCCUSA Group Ride in and around Houston’s Memorial Park on Saturday, June 1, from around 9:00 through 11:00. Arrive before 9:00 and we’ll do a quick safety bike check for newer riders. Some points ... just like normal organized rides: helmets are required, no earbuds, faster riders start early, etc., etc., etc.

We’ll start from the Memorial Park Running Trails Center (7575 N Picnic Lane, 77007). There is plenty of parking nearby. The park area is a simple flat ride, but for the more adventurous it’s easy to get to Buffalo Bayou Park, which is further down Memorial Drive.

Good morning, All!

We’re just a couple hours away from our first #GCCUSA Ride! I hope that you’re as excited as I am (I’ve been waiting all year for this!). Have your coffee or tea to start your day, and have a light breakfast. We’re not going to go crazy with our ride today, but let’s build the excitement to share with your supporters. Pictures! Pictures! Pictures!

Good morning, all!

Right now we are 26 hours away from our first ride (June 1 @ 9:00-11:00). The weather looks to be perfect for our ride with little to no chance of rain and warm temperatures, so be ready for a little light work.

Get there a little early so we can do a quick rally and meet each other (and the surprise visitor from #GCCUSA) before the ride. We’ll do a quick safety check and review the “rules of the road” before we start. Safety is important so we can finish the ride and the month in good shape.

Until tomorrow ... Dream of the kids we’ll be helping!

Good morning, Lacy!

I’ll be there early, so let’s plan to meet and talk about any questions you might have. I expect that there will be plenty of other great riders who will be able to assist, too.

Till tomorrow!

Hi Paul,

I will not be able to make it as I will be in a workshop. When will the next rides be? Do you have a calendar with locations and times you can post?

Wow! We have 14 riders confirmed and another 16 “interested”! It should be a nice kick off ride for our June rides and I hope that we are able to use this for more donations along with encouraging more riders to join us. Last year we had 50,000+ riders ... this year we have 75,000+!!! You all are awesome!

Hi, I am new to road biking and a type 1 diabetic. I am training for the JDRF bike ride and decided to let my training help these kids. I work the night shift and would love to meet up with this group. I will probably be there earlier and start riding. I will hook up with the group but will have to leave a little early so that I can get home and get some sleep before my next shift. Please let me know if this is OK.

Good Morning, Riders!!

We’re three days away from our kickoff Group Ride and I’m looking forward to meeting each of you. My reminders for all ...

1) Check your bikes and make sure you are ready for our ride (and your rides through the month). Tire Pressure and Brakes are paramount!

2) Lubricate your chain with a good chain lubricate. If it squeaks it’s not good!

3) I’ll have a tire pump with me just in case.

We’ll go over the bike route before we start. If you are a faster rider you’re free to go ahead. As this is a timed ride I expect that we’ll be able to get in about 24 - 25 miles in the two hours.

Best Regards!

Paul

Hello. I am new to biking BUT excited about joining his ride and cause. I don’t see the distance of the ride? Is this a far as you can make it ride, or is it just based on a time slot?

Myla, this is basically a “timed” ride within the Memorial Park area. I’ve done it numerous times and we should be able to complete 20-24 miles during the 2 hour timeframe.

I’m looking forward to meeting you and the other riders. This is great event for an exceptional cause.

Good morning, Myla ... This ride is really based on the time available so people can put it in the schedule. For most people we should be able to complete 20-24 miles. I am looking forward to meeting all of our riders and starting the month strong.

Hey, Folks, we’ve been asked if #GCCUSA can send a representative to our Group Ride to do some pictures and rally with us. Your call ... I’m open to it, but your input will help.

Folks,

We are two weeks out from our first #GCCUSA ride (our Group Ride) and I’m just sending a quick reminder that it’s a good time to go through your bike and equipment to make sure that everything is at the ready. Check your tires, lubricate your chain, and make sure your pedals are in good shape. It’s that old Scout motto ... “Be Prepared”.

I’m looking forward to meeting each of you on June 1 and having our first group ride.

A snapshot of our ride path is attached. Houston’s Memorial Park - Picnic Lane and around the Golf Course on the road.

Best regards and #GCCUSA - We ride for those who can’t — YET!

Folks, we’re about 3 weeks away from June and the start of our rides. I’m thankful that we have 21 riders who are going on or are interested in our first Group Ride ... June 1. Please let me know if there is anything I can do to help you get ready for the rigors of the rides. (I just had work done on my bike, so I’m as ready as I can be!!)

Some things to remember and possible points of contact ... May is Houston’s Bike Month. May 15 is the Ride of Silence to remember riders who have been killed or injured, and May 17 & 18 is the Houston Bike Summit at Sawyer Yards. I hope to see some of you at different events and through the month of June.
