Jessie Winkler

This is my friend, she will probably be mad I put her picture here. She is fighting breast cancer. I can't do anything to help her, but try to help someone else.

My Story

7 Aug 2020

Cancer touches everyone and I feel like it is all around me. I think about my Uncle Keith, my Uncle B, My dear friend battling cancer now, Steve's Mom and sister. I like to focus on things I can control in my life but cancer is not in my control.

But this is can do!! I will ride my bike for 350 miles or more and be grateful for life. I will send my love and effort (and fundraising) out to help take back control.

I wish the people of the world would stop fighting each other and realize our real common enemy is disease. We should all be fighting the diseases that take husbands/fathers to soon, steal futures from children, and erase the memories from the elderly while they still live. Life is a precious gift, a miracle, a triumph! I will live in gratitude and appreciation for it everyday.

  • Last day of September!
    30 Sep 2020

It’s the last day of September and this challenge is officially coming to an end. I have so many people to thank for donating and cheering me on along the way! Thanks to my mom for coming along for the ride, I’m really proud of what we were able to do this month. Thanks to Steve for never ever holding me back from a ride bc of the kids, and riding the kal-haven trail with me. I’ve watched the seasons change while i was out on that bike this month, there was plenty of fall color out today on our final ride. The final mile count is 364 And i raised $3822.05! Thanks to everyone who donated for making this possible. I did this crazy thing to do something with my feelings of helplessness and sadness for my friends and loved ones that are fighting or fought cancer. I hope this energy gets turned into hope and happiness for someone out there.

  • THANK YOU DONORS!!
    18 Sep 2020

Thanks to some very generous donations yesterday, I reached my donation goal of this challenge!!!!

Thank you, Thank you, Thank you to everyone who help me reach $3500 for the Children's Cancer Research Fund.

I'm still peddling as hard as I can to get to 350 miles ridden this month, but raising the funds to fight cancer is the point of this challenge. I hope someone somewhere gets the hope and happiness of a cure, and that maybe we have helped in some small way. Thank you again all you lovely amazing people!

  • In it for the long ride!
    8 Sep 2020

So far I've ridden over 100 miles and spent more then 10 hours on my bike... and thats just since last Tuesday. My motivation is so clear and focused right now that I haven't skipped a day. The riding is getting faster and easier. I look forward to getting on the bike every day even though my butt hurts and my legs are sore. Thank you so much for all the people who have donated, you are allowing me to make an impact in a space that had me feeling helpless.

  • Upping My Goal!
    20 Aug 2020

I originally set my goal for fundraising at $500 because I truly had no idea what was possible to raise. But, thanks to an over flow of support from you guys, I hit that goal before I even started riding. SO to keep challenging myself. I upped my goal... by like 700%, to $3500.

My mom ( who is also riding in the challenge) went on a 17 mile ride yesterday which took just under 2 hours. It felt great! We only have to do that like 20+ more times in Sept. I know I'm going to continue to go farther and faster each time.

I'm looking forward to this challenge in so many ways. Yes, the I love psychical aspect, but it helps my mental state too to feel like I'm contributing finding life savings treatments for children's cancer.

  • Prepping for the Cycle Challenge
    11 Aug 2020

I’ve been training to get physically ready for this cycle challenge. But i’ve also been trying to mentally get ready.

Part of that for me has been reading and learning about Cancer. Today, I finished “The Emperor of All Maladies, a biography of Cancer” by Siddhartha Mukherjee. The audio book is over 20 hours long. It’s a heavy, heart breaking look at the humankind’s war on cancer. Starting with the first known records of the disease in 2500BC in ancient Egypt, all the way the modern mapping of the Cancer Genome (Atlas Project). I was struck by the amount suffering from this disease (really many diseases) over the course of hundreds of years. How far cancer care has come seems like a miracle, but still falls so far short from what I need it to be.

The book highlights the formation of the Children’s Cancer Research Fund, which the cycle challenge benefits, as an important and pivotal moment in the cancer treatment history. I’m very happy to support this cause.

I’m grateful to the doctors and researchers, and, most of all, patients that have pushed the boundaries of what is known and possible. Many dedicated their lives, even more gave their lives. I’d recommend this book not because it is pleasant, it’s not even all that hopefully at times, but it is relevant and important to understand what we are up against as a collective human race. We are all fighting cancer one way or another.
