My Story

This September, I am taking part in the Great Cycle Challenge to fight kids' cancer!

Why? Because right now, cancer is the biggest killer of children from disease in the United States. Over 15,700 children are diagnosed every year, and sadly, 38 children die of cancer every week.

Kids should be living life, not fighting for it.

So I am raising funds through my challenge to help these kids and support Children's Cancer Research Fund to allow them to continue their work to develop lifesaving treatments and find a cure for childhood cancer.

Please support me by making a donation to give these kids the brighter futures they deserve.

Your support will change little lives.

Thank you.

Dan

    27 Sep 2020

We are approaching the end of September and I'm very blessed and pleased to announce we are well on our way to achieving both the updated donation and mileage goals. Currently holding the number 2 slot for donations in the Youngstown Chapter and 52nd in the State of PA. Thank you so much for your support and please share my page if you are able to. We are currently ranking 6th in the State of PA for mileage with plans to crush that at the crack of dawn. Finally got one of the Trout Island bucks on video, will post in the comments.

    22 Sep 2020

Had an excellent 40 mile ride this evening but need to remind myself to reel it in a bit, it's a marathon and were only in the 18th mile. Caught myself doing some sprints and hill climbing out of the saddle without shifting to the granny gears, that's a a no no for an old man like me, lol. Thank you for your continued support!

    21 Sep 2020

The past 36 hours yielded 153.96 miles with 378 to go. Morning temps will be in the 38-40 degree range with a chance of patchy frost for the next two days. Going to have switch up the plan for an earlier work day and longer evening rides for at least the next two days. Will try to catch one of those bucks on video Wed - Thur morning at Trout Island Trail. Had an incredible 113 mile ride in Ohio yesterday. Thanks for your support and for those of you one the fence the clock is ticking!

Bike computer is matching the app near perfect, I did forget to turn the app on when I started out on an intended 100 mile ride. Ended up riding 113 because I just wanted to see the triple digits on the app, lol.

    12 Sep 2020

Last two days were some challenging riding due to the wind which is seemingly blowing from all damn directions. We went from mid 80's a humid to wearing a light jacket on this mornings ride. Deer were acting absolutely crazy yesterday on Trout Island Trial. Had to yell at a young buck to avoid a collision. The deer encounters will certainly get more interesting as we are approaching that "magical" time of the year know at the rut. Strangely the only animal seen on today's rides was a house cat, lol. Packing a lunch and hitting a new trail in the morning, Allegheny River Trail, Emlenton to Franklin out and back.

Hit the longest ride of September to date, 42.52 miles on Stavich Bike Trail. Picked that trail for today due to the heavy rain from yesterday, no issues. The only form of wildlife was a lone turkey, lol. Please note the donation matches tomorrow. The first 1.2 million in donations tomorrow get a 100% match. I'd like to see 15 people donate $20 each, that will nearly get us to my personal (updated, lol) fundraising goal. Your morale support is appreciated just as much. Help this awesome team fight kids cancer!

    8 Sep 2020

Managed to get a loop in at Wilhelm then did some riding staying within a mile of my parking spot due to a looming thunderstorm. Have no issues ridding in the rain, lightning, nope, not rolling the dice with that one. Fell 12 miles short of my daily 30 mile goal and will try to make that up tomorrow.

  • Mileage Upadate / John C. Oliver Multi-Purpose Loop Trail
    7 Sep 2020

I have to say the John C. Oliver Multi-Purpose Loop Tail is by far the absolute best off road paved trail in the area. The 12 mile loop around Lake Wilhelm is rather technical so be ready to hit every gear and chain ring on your bike. On two separate rides I saw 2 doe, got an up close and personal with a nice young 4 point buck, probably a couple hundred chipmunks (not exaggerating), cranes, and the absolute most spectacular view of an Osprey flying threw a semi wooded area. I have no idea how it did not bounce off a tree. I got a new phone with extended battery life and am going to look into adding some video clips soon.

  • Weekend Update 1
    5 Sep 2020

Riding continues on multiple trials in Mercer and Lawrence Counties. Had to made some adjustments to the cleats due to some left heel irritation. If any of you even consider cycling for extended period of time and distances it is crucial to have a properly fitted bike and equipment. Not doing so can ruin a knee or cause serious damage to your feet. I'll post a picture of what I'm talking about with the cleats. Major announcement coming - a generous donor will match up to 1.2 million in all on line donations this coming Wednesday. I have a personal donor who is going to match some donations as well - so I NEED YOUR SUPPORT! Seeking 20 people to donate $20 each this Wednesday - more to follow!

  • Stavich Bike Trail
    5 Sep 2020

Rode the Stavich Bike Trail from the New Castle trail head to Loweville, Ohio and back twice. Was a rather uneventful ride, the Ohio side is really in need of repair and not recommended for a road bike. Shoes needed some adjusting, having a slight irritation in my left heel. Hoping some new inserts and realignment of my cleats will resolve that.

  • Trout Island Trail - Day 3
    4 Sep 2020

Was a great day for riding, two solid hour long rides. Foggy morning ride with 3 doe sightings. Evening ride was near perfect, got within arms reach of nice doe. Haven't seen the bucks going on 3 weeks now. Took a 5 day weekend so I'm done with Trout Island Trail with the exception on a recovery ride here and there, will be raking up some mileage in New Castle and Lake Wilhelm areas. Thanks again for your support!

    3 Sep 2020

Trout island trail day 2 overall yielded some semi productive mileage. The morning ride was a flop due to some technical issues between my phone and the bike computer. Although it was thoroughly enjoyable riding in a moderate downpour I was not willing to damage my equipment in the process. Issue resolved and won't surface again. Saw a big ole bull frog hoping down the trail. Evening ride was a nice 90 plus minutes, saw 4 doe the usual cardinals and a flock of Canadian Geese lounging in the lower end (swampy) area of the trail.

  • 696.63 miles it is.
    1 Sep 2020

Odometer is reset, bikes ready, I'm ready, fundraising goal updated 3 fold. Will I match you mile per dollar? Make that donation as see. Two a days commence at 0630, Trout Island Trail is not going to know what hit it. Will it be painful? Yes. Will some days just outright suck? Yes. But what I endure on that bike will not be a fraction of an inch of the 696.63 miles compared to what a child deals with when being diagnosed with cancer. That my friends is what the definition of suck is. Thanks again for your support!
