Joan Althaus

Joan’s first challenge with squamous cell carcinoma of her tonsil came in 1989. She just turned 40 and was the mother of three young children. Joan had no known risk factors for the disease. She went to Duke Hospital where she was treated with radiation, chemo, and surgery. She recovered and lived life well, raising our three children, and then raising two more who needed a home. All the while, she worked as a Home Health Nurse, caring for others. The years were not easy. The massive amounts of radiation she had received left her with no saliva, extensive damage to her teeth, little ability to taste, and difficulty swallowing. She never complained. This past April (2021), she received the news that the cancer had returned to her throat. She was given several treatment options, including “no treatment”. She chose the most aggressive option - surgery and throat reconstruction. She received the surgery on June 4, 2021. The actual surgery lasted seventeen hours, done by three different teams of surgeons. The picture shows her in ICU on June 5th.

My Story

This September, I am taking part in the Great Cycle Challenge to fight kids' cancer!

Why? Because right now, cancer is the biggest killer of children from disease in the United States. Over 15,700 children are diagnosed every year, and sadly, 38 children die of cancer every week.

Kids should be living life, not fighting for it.

So I am raising funds through my challenge to help these kids and support Children's Cancer Research Fund to allow them to continue their work to develop lifesaving treatments and find a cure for childhood cancer.

Please support me by making a donation to give these kids the brighter futures they deserve.

Your support will change little lives.

Thank you.

Dave
