My Story

5 Aug 2022

Two things about me:

I started my cancer journey in March 2020. Occasionally my spirits were frankly, down in the dumps. I developed a coping mechanism: I'd ask my husband Jim to remind me that there are thousands of children with cancer. Sadly, they haven't had a chance to experience life, while I've lived a reasonably long and wonderful life. This approach helped me to stop feeling sorry for myself and enjoy life.

Second, as most of you know, cycling became a passion for me during retirement. Annually, I “bike-my-age” on one day near my birthday in September. My 68-mile ride last year was particularly important to me, the first big ride after major bladder-removal surgery. This year, due to my current cancer situation (stage 4 bladder cancer), I won't be able to complete my 69-mile bike ride. Bummer.

Then a few weeks ago, I learned of the “Great Cycle Challenge” which benefits the Children's Cancer Research Fund*. The idea is to bike any desired number of miles in September while raising funds to support kids with cancer. Wow, this fundraiser is perfect for me! I can help kids with cancer, complete a bike ride that's achievable for me, and it occurs in September.

So I pledge to bike 69 miles total during the month of September. Since my chemotherapy continues through the end of September, I may only be cycling a few miles a day, but I'll get it done! I'm asking that you support me, and more importantly help children with cancer.

Wish me luck and thank you in advance!

    Together we did it!

The final miles were biked for me by friends Leslie Kachmar and Pete and Becky Bell. Much appreciated!

Together we raised over $14,000!!!! I could never have imagined this when I started this fundraiser. You made this phase of my cancer journey such an incredible experience! Thank you! Thank you! Thank you!

And with over $10 million raised throughout the nation, research on children's cancer WILL make progress.

KIDS SHOULD BE ENJOYING LIFE, NOT FIGHTING CANCER!

  • Almost at Goal
    25 Sep 2022

With a little help from my friends, we achieved my goal of biking 16 miles last week for a total of 58 miles. My thanks to Jennifer Decima, Susan Banaszak Shirey and Jane Theoharides who rode for me.

On my health front, the last chemo treatment is tomorrow. The chemo has successfully decreased the size of my lymph nodes so I'm approved to go to the next phase. I'll be receiving immunotherapy treatment every other week for two years. There is no cure for my cancer, but this is the best path for maintaining my health. And side-effects are minimal. Jim and I are very happy.

I ask that your prayers and good thoughts continue for Claire and her family. She has been in and out of the hospital and is suffering with pain. KIDS SHOULD BE ENJOYING LIFE, NOT FIGHTING CANCER!

Thank you all for your support of this important cause. We received two more donations last week. Please share my page if you know anyone else who would like to donate.

  • Making progress
    19 Sep 2022

Last week "we" biked 16 miles. I managed to do 4 on a recumbent indoor bike. My nephew Adam and his wife Salena biked 12 for me. Thank you two! So we're over 60% of the way to 69 miles.

On the more important fundraising side, we've now raised $13,652!!!! That included several recent donations that were matched from a major donor grant of $1.5 million. So far, here in the U.S., this year's effort has raised over $9.4 million!!!

    Chemo Round 6 starts today.

  • Tough week
    11 Sep 2022

The cumulative effect of chemo finally got me this past week, and bike riding just wasn't possible. I did ride 4 miles on a recumbent bike in our community gym, and I accepted 8 miles, donated from my friend, Ken. So I'm where I planned to be at 26 miles.

I'm hoping that you, my kind donors, won't mind that I'm cheating a bit. Don't feel sorry for me. Just imagine how chemo affects kids.🥲

Hopefully this week will be better
