My Story

30 Sep 2020

This September, I am taking part in the Great Cycle Challenge to fight kids' cancer!

Why? Because I am a cancer fighter. I was diagnosed a couple months after my 46th birthday. I had 45 cancer-free years. But, right now, cancer is the biggest killer of children from disease in the United States. Over 15,700 children are diagnosed every year, and sadly, 38 children die of cancer every week. I am riding for these children and my friend's daughter, Gemma, who survived leukemia, and my friend's niece, Hope, who was diagnosed with a gastric adenocarcinoma in September of this year.

Kids should be living life, not fighting for it.

I am raising funds through my challenge to create hope for a cancer-free future. Please help the Children's Cancer Research Fund to continue to develop lifesaving treatments and find a cure for childhood cancer.

Please support me by making a donation to give these kids the brighter futures they deserve.

God bless,

Lani

  • Day 30: Every Day for Hope
    30 Sep 2020

Day 30: Every Day for Hope. Today is the last day of the Great Cycle Challenge. I have spent a lot of my time cycling (45 hrs & 1,027 miles) in prayer & reflection.

A recurring theme in my thoughts & prayers was this: We are living in a time of transcendence.

One thing we need to transcend is helplessness. Turn your feelings of

    helplessness

    into actions of

    helpfulness.

This is a way for us to step out of darkness and create hope, a light for those who would follow us.

For me, helpfulness meant cycling and raising awareness and funds for childhood cancer. Knowing many children in my circle who have been diagnosed and survived and another who is fighting gastric adenocarcinoma now has helped me to turn my feelings of helplessness into actions of helpfulness and hopefulness.

Please keep creating hope for each other by finding ways to help people through crisis. It is our light, the light of hope given to us by Christ that will change the world.

Thank you for all your support, your prayers, your shares, and donations.

Day 3: Thank you to everyone who has donated! I'm on pace to do 300 miles in 10 days! Today, I am praying for Hope. She is the 12 yo niece of a dear friend. She goes today (9/3) for a biopsy on a "grapefruit-sized" tumor growing in her stomach. Please pray with me: hope for Hope. πŸ™πŸΌβ€πŸ™πŸΌ

Day 4: Another 30 miles and prayers for Hope as she and her parents wait for biopsy results. Those days can be agonizing. Pray that they are able to stay positive. The worst days for me were the days of waiting and fighting off the "what-ifs" while not being able to focus on the "what-is". And the "what-is" are wonderful: the family, friends, and happiness we have in front of us.

    30 Sep 2020

Day 5: We drove up to Michigan last night, stayed up late catching up w/ my sis, then I woke up w/ a migraine 😢. I took some ibuprofen then pushed through to get my HR up and let my endorphins fight the migraine. It worked and I was able to get that time to meditate & pray for all the cancer fighters on my list. Loves, sometimes we need to push past the hard part to get to our goals, the good part. Just keep fighting. Just keep praying. Every day. ❀

Day 6: Thank you for your support & prayers. I have 116 miles left on my 300 miles in 10 day goal, and I am up to $420 raised. ❀ It's hard to prioritize cycling for 30 miles while the boys are out on a morning hike at Silver Lake Dunes, but I know they are having fun, and we will get our time together later. πŸŒŠβ€πŸ’™

P.S. If all goes well with my health, I am going to try to cycle 1000 miles this month or $1 for every dollar donated.

  • Day 8: Every Day for Hope
    30 Sep 2020

Day 8: πŸ™πŸΌ Still praying for Hope as her family await her biopsy results. It helps me to reflect on my own cancer journey, waiting for those results. I was scared, but thankful. I was thankful because I thought about all the scientists & researchers who worked to identify, isolate, and develop analytical tests to find those receptors to classify & grade tumors.

My experience in environmental βš— analytical chemistry, knowing the steps that it takes to develop, test, then run any analytical method makes me appreciate the thousands of hours of discovery, lab work, and then criticism & publication that goes into these tests. Yes, it totally sucks when you're waiting for results and trying to stay positive, but that these tests exist is enough to make me realize that God always has a plan. From the young kid in high school who is good at math and science becoming that lab intern in a professor's lab, acid cleaning and autoclaving glassware, to the graduate student micro-pipetting thousands of samples and summarizing literature searches, to the PhD candidate working with the professor to make the discovery & develop a method based on the work of previous research, God has a plan. So, while I am praying for Hope, I am also thanking God for all the people who He gifted with talents to get Hope to this point: where she, her parents, and her doctors can create a plan to return Hope to good health.

Please support the fund and the science & research that goes into fighting cancer.

You know what's hard? The last five miles. I have to tell myself not to watch the last mile slowly tick away on my Wahoo Cycling app. 😁 It's even harder when the hubs is in the kitchen warming up his lunch. πŸ‘ƒπŸ€€

You know what's easy? Donating $5 to End Children's Cancer. Your $5 becomes $10 today. Any amount doubles and every dollar helps. ❀ (If you don't want to donate online/via FB, please DM me for cash or check instructions. If I enter it today, it will still be doubled.)

Please continue to pray for Hope and all the children battling cancer. If you're in my circle, you know a family who has been touched by childhood cancer. You know at least one person who has been touched by this disease - you at least know me! Please help give these children and their families the tools they need to fight, either through prayers, asking them how you can help, and/or donating to a cancer fund, like the Children's Cancer Research Fund.

Or maybe it was because I lost myself cycling πŸš΄β€β™€οΈ today, reflecting on my cancer journey, praying for all of us in this fight, especially Hope, and thinking of how cancer has changed my relationship w/ my kids. I would never wish this journey on anyone. But I am grateful for what it has brought me to understand about life, what's important, and what I should cherish: the time I have with the people I love.

Thank you for being here. Thank you for keeping me present. πŸ™πŸΌβ€πŸ™πŸΌ

I am so grateful that my doctors have a treatment plan for me to get cancer-free. That treatment plan was hard fought by thousands of πŸ’Ÿ women before me who won or lost this battle, and thousands of doctors, scientists, and researchers who perervered to understand and develop these treatments.

Please continue to support this research. Encourage children with an affinity to science and math to use their talents, pray for an end to cancer, support families in this crisis, or donate to research funds like the Children's Cancer Research Fund. β€πŸ™πŸΌβ€

Please continue to pray for hope as her Riley doctors and family work on a treatment plan. Gastric adenocarcinoma is incredibly rare, making up less than 0.05% of childhood cancers. Hope's Riley doctors are preparing for a long surgery to remove as much of they can of the large tumor in her stomach and smaller one in her lungs. The hardest thing to do is to stay hopeful. When we fight cancer, the hardest part is the emotional strength to perservere. Please pray that Hope & her family continue to have faith, to hope, to believe in her cancer-free future.

Day 21: Every Day for Hope. πŸ™πŸΌβ€πŸ™πŸΌYour prayers are working! Keep them coming for Hope. She made it through the surgery to remove the two spots in her lungs. Then she will start radiation. Please pray for her as she recovers from surgery. Pray to help her family stay hopeful for and faithful in her cancer-free future.

The reason why these treatments exist is because of decades of tireless work by research scientists, biomedical engineers, lab technicians, biostaticians, doctors, nurses, and countless others, who dedicated their careers to finding a cure, each using their talents and knowledge to make one small part of the larger whole, from medicines to operating tools, from PET scan methods to implementing radiation therapies... there are so many parts. At each part, a person was there to study, learn, and create the information that became Hope's treatment plan.

Please continue to support this research by praying, supporting the families in cancer crisis, sharing stories, and donating when you can. We can help to give hope to all those children and families fighting cancer. πŸ™πŸΌβ€πŸ™πŸΌ

I'm afraid of falling because I can't unclip my cycling shoes fast - I have fallen many times in my driveway! - and I'm scared of traffic. Drivers don't see cyclists. But it was nice to get out on the road. I even let myself go fast for a bit, topping out at about 26 mph. 😁
