I'm Riding For

Doreen Wills

Doreen Wills

This year I am riding for a courageous young lady and friend Doreen Wills. She is a wonderful wife and mother. Doreen is fighting to beat cancer and is well on her way to regaining her health. She is surrounded by her loving husband Curt and her four wonderful children Taylor, Trevor, Kevin, and Kendall. They are who they are because of the care, love, and kindness she has instilled in them. We are all very supportive of Doreen in her fight to kick cancer to the ground! You go girl!

My Story

This September, I am taking part in the Great Cycle Challenge to fight kids' cancer!

Why? Because right now, cancer is the biggest killer of children from disease in the United States. Over 15,700 children are diagnosed every year, and sadly, 38 children die of cancer every week.

Kids should be living life, not fighting for it.

So I am raising funds through my challenge to help these kids and support Children's Cancer Research Fund to allow them to continue their work to develop lifesaving treatments and find a cure for childhood cancer.

Please support me by making a donation to give these kids the brighter futures they deserve.

Your support will change little lives.

Thank you.

Jim

Today was a windy ride, but fun as always. Why is it that every turn of the bike path or no matter which way a golf hole seems to turn you always feel like you are heading into the wind? Mother Nature, she can be a tricky gal but I love her none the less.

This was the last ride of the 2020 Great Cycle Challenge. This challenge was by far the most fun for me because people followed the right-ups and were so encouraging. We set a all time high in this drive to help these kids (over $3,700!). The latest I have from GCC is we have collected over $14,000,000 dollars to help these children beat this terrible illness. So, once again I thank you all for your donations and encouragement. Special thanks to you folks that actually took the time to read my observations on my rides. Nothing new today. I saw New Mama again which was very a fitting way to reach the goal line.

    Peace, Jim

One more day to ride tomorrow. I will cover over 600 miles unless a cement truck gets in the way. :-) It was lofty goal considering this month we went back to school. However, it is nothing compared to what these brave children are going through each and every day. Thank you all for your kindness and special thanks to those folks that give me encouragement when I see you at work or socially. Peace, Jim

Another gorgeous evening. We made our goal of 500 miles in September with 6 days to spare. I will keep adding as I ride until the moth is up. Took some pictures of wild flowers to create a virtual bouquet of flowers for the ladies in my room. They are wonderful with me and the kids. I am thankful. Thank you all so much for donating and asking me about the challenge. You are helping these kids and they know it. I will share the totals we have collected as I get the next update. It will probably be later in October when we have a final total. It is in the multiple millions of dollars.

Not much exciting happened on tonight's ride. Other than it being a fantastic day to breath fresh air while cruising down the bike path. I did see New Mama again. That is always nice. I also took some photos I will share with my class of the absolute beauty that is in the woods if you open up your senses to take it in. I always feel bad for those bikers I see that are so focused on going fast that they miss the beautiful hawk in the sky.

Lastly, Inside of 15 miles left after today to reach the 500 mile goal. I will keep riding and posting miles throughout September beyond my goal. Thanks again to everyone that donated and takes time to read these posts. Peace, Jim

What a beautiful Day for bike riding! My legs were super strong! I have been struggling lately but yoga the last two night really woke my legs up. There were a couple things that stood out today. I saw a chicken grazing in a front yard in old downtown Warrenville. I got a picture that I will load onto our Canvas class page. I met a female me. I biked like crazy to catch this lass biking ahead of me. Normally, I begin to naturally catch up with folks but this lady kept pulling away. I raced and finally caught up to her. I told her you can really bike! She was around my age, probably a little younger, most folks are, she smiled and said she was finishing up a 50 mile ride. Making her a female me. Ha! I also saw New Mama. I do not know this mom's name but I saw her all summer at different times of the day along the DuPage river walking her baby. I finally started calling out to her "New Mama!" The name kind of stuck. She smiles from ear to ear. SUPPORT HAITI SCHOLARS when you can. Whenever folks more unfortunate than we are advance, we all advance! Hi Nicole. Peace, Jim

It does not take much for something to happen on a bicycle ride that creates an impression on me when I remain open to interacting with folks on the bike path. I always try to give a good strong thumbs up to any youngster I see riding, just to let them know I think they are doing a great thing. In the early evening today I watched a young lass about 6 tooling along very quickly on her bike. Her mother trailed behind her pushing a pram with the young girl's baby brother or sister. I reached up and out and gave her a good thumbs up. She smiled and shot her thumb right back up to me as she sped by. I started laughing loudly while pounding on my handlebars and her mother was heartily laughing along. It is fleeting moments like these, with complete strangers, which only last but two or three seconds, that create memories that will last the rest of my life. That little girl was in absolute heaven speeding down the bike path and she took me with her because of the joy I saw in her face. I laughed today as the kids in my class and I learned together, to finish the day with this moment was the icing on the cake. I have less than 125 miles left to reach my goal with 13 days left in the month. I hope that little girl dreams of biking and the kids we are helping get healthy and join her on the bike path some day. Peace, Jim

First, I need to mention we went over $3000 in donations so THANK YOU ALL! Overall the Great Cycle Challenge has taken in more than $7,000,000 to date to fight Children's Cancer! I see new Cycle Challenge participants every day I ride now. It is great to see. Today's ride was wonderful. 40 miles in the sunshine. I saw many joggers, walkers, and bicyclist enjoying the beautiful day. I try to give everyone the peace sign as I ride by. I get mots of smiles. Thanks again, Jim

Today's ride was great! I saw a young deer on the path right after Ogden heading north in the spring. There was a group of 5 or 6 folks watching him no more than 6 feet from him. He looked at us and was not scared. Well, I saw him in the same spot today and took three pictures I loaded on my Canvas page. One he is looking right into the camera! He had obviously grown and was now sprouting beautiful antlers! He did not care that I was that close at all so I am confident it is the same deer. The event made my whole day. I can't wait to show the kids! :-)
