I'm Riding For

Mary Catherine Hook Virnig

Mary Catherine Hook Virnig

My daughter MC, a true Warrior. Basketball player, track 1600 and 3200 meter runner, valedictorian, cattle showperson, and state cross country runner... Mary took her final lap on Thanksgiving Day Nov 25, 2010. And now we continue her fight against Neuroblastoma and other childhood cancers.

My Story

10 Jun 2019

This June, I am joining my husband Arden Virnig, 4 year veteran in the Great Cycle Challenge to fight kids' cancer. I decided to help him out so he wouldn't have to ride as many miles this year as he had his knee replaced 7 months ago. But he is determined to ride 1135 miles so he can achieve his goal of riding 5000 miles in 5 Junes to support Children's Cancer Research. We are both committed to Children's Cancer Research Foundation because it supports researchers, often young graduates, with novel ideas to treat childhood cancers like the Neuroblastoma that took our daughter Mary Catherine's life.

So I am raising funds through my challenge to help the kids like our Mary and their families. And did you know? Breakthroughs in children's cancer treatments translate into new approaches to adult cancers too.

Please support me by making a donation to give these brave kids a future.

Your support-- all amounts welcome-- will change little lives. Thank you for your generous spirit!

We have been out of the bike saddles for 3 days to attend our Godchild Josie's college graduation. Thought we might rent bikes while here but just not feasible. Arden has alot of miles to make up. Not so bad for me as I'm at 190.8 miles thus far with MUCH lower mileage goal.

Ironic, the last time we were here in the San Francisco Bay area was for our Mary to receive then-experimental MIBG-radioactive tagged stem cells. They were infused to directly target the residual neuroblastoma cancer cells and eradicate them. Didn't work so well for her... Now this treatment is more refined and is offered in many locations--including Mary's medical oncology home at The U of MN, thanks in part to Children's Cancer Research funds from Great Cycle Challenge that have pushed the research to new levels.

As we landed here a couple days ago, my eyes brimmed with tears remembering arriving in 2007 with Mary wearing the hated mask to prevent infection, a regrowth of short curly hair that she would soon lose, and the angst of knowing the isolation and side effects that were to come.

  • 100 miles
    10 Jun 2019

89 degrees + 100 miles the past 2 days = Sunburn. Great sunny days to be riding! What I like the most about bicycling is seeing the Greater Mille Lacs Lake community we love up close, on roads less travelled. See the photos posted on Arden's Great Cycle Challenge page of local businesses we visited this weekend. Of course, when one is the stoker on a tandem, this is the view I see the most. As the saying goes, If you're not the lead dog, the scenery never changes!

  • First Week of The Great Cycle Challenge
    10 Jun 2019

I have pledged to ride 10 miles/day. I logged 111.4 miles through 6/7/19 so I have a few in the bank. :) My husband and teammate in The Great Cycle Challenge and in life, kicked off Day 1 with a 34.4 mile tandem ride. Day 2 was a 12 mile mountain bike ride at Cuyuna Recreation Area, and the balance I rode solo on my road bike. Here I am at our Richardson Corner clinic, one of our 4 neighborhood clinics.
