My Story

This June, I am taking part in the Great Cycle Challenge to fight kids' cancer!

Why? Because right now, cancer is the biggest killer of children from disease in the United States. Over 15,700 children are diagnosed every year, and sadly, 38 children die of cancer every week.

Kids should be living life, not fighting for it.

So I am raising funds through my challenge to help these kids and support Children's Cancer Research Fund to allow them to continue their work to develop lifesaving treatments and find a cure for childhood cancer.

Please support me by making a donation to give these kids the brighter futures they deserve.

Your support will change little lives.

Thank you.

Paul

  • Seven rides down ... taking a weekend break
    16 Jun 2018

I'm 60% of my goal and taking a couple of days to catch up on household work before the push to the end of the month. Five more Centuries will let me hit my goal, but I hope to exceed that number. With each ride I think of the kids we are helping to support through our donations to the Great Cycle Challenge (#GCCUSA). Your generosity will make life easier for these kids who can't ride as we do ... yet.

    14 Jun 2018

This was a wonderful day for riding ... slight breeze (that didn't knock me off the bike) and had the opportunity to say hello to Robby Matthews on the White Oak Bayou area trail.

Also, Memorial Park was hosting their weekly Criterium races. I watched for a few minutes, knowing that I'd never be able to compete with those awesome riders then rode the four miles to get back home.

What a great day for a ride!

I met a young woman on the White Oak Trail prepping for a Bike to Colorado ride with her husband and father-in-law. What an adventure!

  • June 6 Ride. 102 actual.
    6 Jun 2018

I found that Strava shuts data collection whe phone battery is too low, so today’s number is less than actual, but that’s OK.

Found another #GCCUSA rider on the White Oak Bayou trail ... it was good to see other riders on each of my three rides so far.

It was hot and humid and tough, but I was able to clock 106 miles today ... and even saw another rider wearing his GCC jersey on the White Oak Bayou trail. I look forward to more rides like this ... #GCCUSA

  • One Week Away from our rides
    25 May 2018

    Folks,

We are one week away from our Great Cycle Challenge (#GCCUSA) rides, so it's time for the normal bike maintenance (and possibly more detailed reviews).

    1) Check your tires for proper pressure and even wear - you don't want to get caught miles away from home.

    2) Check your Chain and Drive System (cassettes & Chain Rings) to make sure that gears change smoothly and the chain has not stretched. Remember that you should not use WD-40 on your chain ... there are proper lubricants for that.

    3) Check your brakes! Rolling is important, but stopping safely is more important!

    4) Check your helmet, water bottles and any gear you bring with you for cleanliness. If you are planning long rides think about the need for some kind of electrolyte water and snacks for on-the-way nourishment.

    5) Let your significant others know when you start your rides, the general route, and when you get back home - just in case.

    6) Carry your emergency numbers just in case!

If you are new to this kind of long-term riding and aren't sure about your bike maintenance, check out the local bike shops to see if they can give your bike the quick once over and, as necessary, some maintenance at a reasonable cost. Let them know you are riding for charity and they may give you a break with the cost.

Let's plan to ride safely and get home in one piece after each ride!

All my best ... and remember that we're riding for those who can't ... yet!

  • I’m a very lucky man ...
    22 May 2018

In looking around at my family (and the extended family) I’ve realized how very fortunate we have been. The kids are healthy and, with that realization, it’s just the right thing to do to help others who are not so fortunate.

I encourage my friends on Facebook and my dance friends to support the Great Cycle Challenge (#GCCUSA) throughout the month of June by donating through my rides or other friends of yours to help the cause. Why are we riding? For those who can’t ... YET.

    18 May 2018

I’m looking forward to riding with my nephew, Kyle Ceppaglia and TeamDoIt during the month of June! It’s easier for me since I’m retired, but he will be working, being a great husband, and being a father to his two children as he raises money for the Great Cycle Challenge. Again, I ask our friends to support our rides and help raise money to combat Childhood Cancer. Go #GCCUSA!!

  • We’re getting close to June’s Rides
    17 May 2018

    Folks,

It’s amazing that we are over 40,000+ Riders signed up for this year’s June rides, and I feel very blessed to be included. Why do we ride? Because Childhood Cancer is devastating to not only the children, but also to the families involved. Where will the money we raise be used? Please refer to the “How You Help” page for details on where the money will be invested.

    Blessings!

  • One Month To Go until June’s Rides
    3 May 2018

    Friends,

We’re in the May Flowers month and I’m getting ready for my #GCCUSA (Great Cycle Challenge USA) rides throughout the month of June. My goals are pretty high ... I want to ride 1,200 miles and raise $1,500 for the Great Cycle Challenge. Your help will make this an easy task, at least the second item! You can find more on my #GCCUSA web page https://greatcyclechallenge.com/Riders/PaulEustace and, if possible, select the Donate button to help.

I’ll update occasionally and let you know throughout June how the rides are going.

    Best regards,

    Paul Eustace
