My Story

30 Mar 2018

This June, I am taking part in the Great Cycle Challenge to fight kids' cancer!

Why? Because right now, cancer is the biggest killer of children from disease in the United States. Over 15,700 children are diagnosed every year, and sadly, 38 children die of cancer every week.

Kids should be living life, not fighting for it.

I have been through radiation therapy. Even as an old man that was no fun! I hate to think of kids undergoing radiation and chemo therapy. And yet I see the brave smiles and great attitudes of most of the kids who are fighting this and I know I have to help.

So I am raising funds through my challenge to help these kids and support Children's Cancer Research Fund to allow them to continue their work to develop lifesaving treatments and find a cure for childhood cancer.

Please support me by making a donation to give these kids the brighter futures they deserve.

Your support will change little lives.

Thank you.

  • Warm Ride and GPS Glitch.
    27 Jun 2018

Good ride today. Very pleasant at start, but warmed rapidly as the sun rose. My Garmin, which seemed to work except for my mileage and track, showed the temperature went from 75 to 100 during the ride. The Garmin and I were both in the sun. The thermometer at home, shaded, went from around 75 to 91.

I had to use my Strava app back-up for this ride. At about 31 or 32 miles the mileage suddenly jumped to 133(x) (around 1337) miles. Garmin support went in and changed the mileage, but the map shows a straight line from Phoenix through San Diego and about half way to Hawaii in addition to my squiggly ride track. Can't wait to see what tomorrow's ride brings.

  • Hard Ride Today
    13 Jun 2018

The route was no more difficult than usual, but my legs were feeling weak today. I managed to make 24.5 miles and the legs told me they would get me home, but no more!

I had promised myself to add a donation of $1/mile for the ride today so I rounded up to $25. Hope to take advantage of some of the matching funds.

  • Not So Many Miles, But Still A Bit Of Effort
    9 Jun 2018

Shorter ride today after a busy day off yesterday. Riding in a pretty area I was wishing all the kids like Callie could grow up and enjoy a ride like this someday. Today riding in memory of Callie and riding for my friend Chad King who had a break in his chemo treatments when his wife gave birth to their first child. May that child never have to go through what his dad did. You rock too, Chad!

  • Good Day
    7 Jun 2018

Yesterday I was wiped out when I finished riding. I was wondering if I could ride at all today. During the day I accidentally tore part of my big toenail. So I wondered how that would feel with a shoe on. Last night I did not rest well. Today I needed 3 miles to make my normal weekly goal (which I have not done often enough this year) and 30 to make my GCC goal. Before I started I thought I would make the 3 and not much more. BUT, I had a really good ride today. I finished tired, but not exhausted. I hope our kids have a good day today also. They deserve it so much more than I.

Riding today for Nathalia and when I got home I saw an email from GCC that featured her. So best wishes as your treatment continues, Natalia. Kick cancer's butt!

Also thinking today about my little brother, Don. He had the zest for life that I see in Nathalia's picture. Unfortunately, cancer took him at the relatively young age of 50. We miss him, but our hope is that the kids like Nathalia who are fighting cancer today will win that battle and enjoy lives to a much older age that Don.

Today's ride was for Gabby, a brave cancer fighter. Also, thinking of the men who stormed the shores of Normandy 74 years ago.

  • Riding for MacKale and for Walt.
    5 Jun 2018

My ride today is dedicated to MacKale and to my big brother, Walt. MacKale can smile in the face of adversity and fight on! An example to us all. Walt is a father, grandfather, great-grandfather, great-great-grandfather, and all around good guy. He fought cancer and won and he supports the kids who are also fighting cancer. We want them to win too.

After my first few miles today I feared I would struggle to reach 10 miles, the shortest ride I was willing to accept today. Thinking of the example set by MacKale and other kids who are fighting cancer spurred me on and I was able to make 10 miles and then a few more.

  • Evening Ride
    4 Jun 2018

After an expensive trip to the bike shop this afternoon I am back on the road with a new tire, new tube, and a new chain on order. Went on the Sunday Sundae Ride with the Sun City West Cyclists. However, as the temperature was around 105 when the ride began only 3 of us showed up. We had a good ride, but I skipped the sundae and picked up a couple more miles for our kids instead.

  • 100 Miles
    3 Jun 2018

I made the first 100 miles this morning. Should have been a few more, but the ride ended with a bang as the rear tube let go. Did not feel like a field fix so I called the SAG wagon. My sweet bride came to the rescue.

    1 Jun 2018

Kick off ride for the Great Cycle Challenge to raise $$$ to fight kid's cancer. Did not start well as loaded, ready to go and last check found my rear tire was flat. Transferred to the MTB, changed shoes and rode. Made a 17 mile loop around the community and decided to fix the flat and ride some more on the road bike. Had a hard time with the flat repair for some reason. Finally got it fixed and rode another 18 miles. Without the kids on my mind I likely would have just fixed the flat and used that as an excuse not to ride. Had I done that I would have let both the kids and myself down. Thanks to all you young warriors for the inspiration.
