My Story

  • Absolutely In Awe of Everyone's Generosity
    1 Jul 2017

I have been trying to think of how I would describe the experience of participating in the Great Cycle Challenge. I am absolutely humbled by the generosity of my friends, my family, my friend's friends, people that I have never met before, and the anonymous people I wish I could thank in person. I honored my commitment to ride an additional 50 miles after reaching my mileage goal of 300 miles. Today, I had two rides; the first was 29. something miles, but I had to get home due to time. I needed 33 miles today to make that extra 50 count. So this evening after we got the little ones to bed, I headed out to ride the last few miles in the dark in my neighborhood to complete my mileage goal. I was not comfortable riding outside of our neighborhood because there are only highways and no one would be looking for a bike on those roads at 9pm.

I was pleasantly surprised to see fire flies everywhere. I mean... it was so cool to see them all over in two fields near our house. I couldn't help but think that there was some special meaning in seeing them everywhere on my last ride for the 2017 Great Cycle Challenge. Perhaps someone was trying to tell me thank you for riding. Maybe it was someone saying, everything is going to be okay. I don't know if there was any meaning at all in that, but it was definitely cool to see.

The donors that gave to the Children's Cancer Research Fund during this fundraiser are the most inspiring and incredible people I could ever hope to imagine. They are from all walks of life... professionals, contractors, military, civilian, family, educators, anonymous, firefighters, law enforcement, college students, computer security techs, and people from my home town! There are sponsors from North Carolina, California, Virginia, Wisconsin, Alaska, Minnesota, Florida, Alabama, Georgia, Arizona, Pennsylvania, Washington State, Washington D.C., Tennessee, Kentucky, Louisiana, Texas, and Michigan! How incredible is that!?!?

Thank you to everyone from the bottom of my heart for your support and generosity during this fundraiser. I have been incredibly humbled by this experience. Thank you for making this an incredible experience for me.

  • What a day.... and it's not even over yet!!!
    29 Jun 2017

Today, two AWESOME things happened that I would like to share... First and foremost the wonderful and generous donors that have given through my page have passed the $8,000 mark!!!! That is more than TRIPLE the original goal I set of $2,500! These wonderful donors, or more accurately termed "sponsors" :), are incredibly inspiring! I am completely humbled that so many people support the Children's Cancer Research Fund through riding a bicycle!

The second thing I would like to share is that I met my goal of 300 miles in the month of June!!!! My celebration was short lived as I was quickly challenged by a long time mentor of mine to ride an additional 50 miles! I accepted his challenge and will be riding those last miles for Tanner, for Pepper, and for Kaylee.

What a day.... and it's not even over yet!!!

  • Cancer Sucks...
    27 Jun 2017

Tonight as I was going though my contacts to send out donation requests to contacts in an effort to support the Great Cycle Challenge. As I was scrolling through, my scan landed on the names of two people that I know that died from different forms of cancer. Earlier today, I read on Facebook that another child fighting cancer passed away. This is why I ride. This is why I send text messages to people i haven't talked to in a long time and sparked conversations with them and caught up on old times. This is why people from all over the country are chipping in what they can to make a difference. You ARE making a difference! YOU keep me motivated to keep sending messages and talking to everyone I can get a few minutes with. You generosity is INCREDIBLE!

I want to take a second to say THANK YOU all of the people that have donated and teamed up to fight cancer. I am honored and humbled this experience for all of the support and giving of your hard earned money to kick cancers butt! All of you are amazing and wonderful people! As it stands at the time of this post, your awesome giving and generosity will TRIPLE my original goal of $2500!!! You guys are AWESOME!!!!!!!

  • A Different Kind of Hurt
    24 Jun 2017

I was sitting with my father in law this afternoon after my ride home from work, talking about this challenge. I mentioned that I had the opportunity to visit a good friend of mine who's daughter was receiving chemo therapy at CHKD in Norfolk, Va. I remember thinking of what it must be like to have the constant visits to chemo, the side effects it causes on the children, and the utter helplessness the parents must feel when watching and there is absolutely nothing they can do except pray and try to console their child. I said "I cannot imagine what it must be like in their place" He said, "when you see a child go through that, it is a different kind of hurt." He is absolutely right. There is no pain, no anguish like watching children fight terrible disease. It isn't supposed to happen. They are children. They don't deserve this, no one does.

I read through the Children's Cancer Research Fund website and read every $1 raised secures $18 of federal funds for research... How awesome is that? What a motivator to raise even more! I am so grateful for the donations that people have given so far. If you are reading this, please forward my link to people you know that would support the Children's Cancer Research Fund! If 5 people send this to 5 people each, and each of those donates $20, that is $500, and if the website was correct about federal funds, that would get the fund $9,000! Please help me spread the word to help the Children's Cancer Research Fund Kick Cancer's Butt! Here is my link. Share it today!

  • Longest Ride Yet....
    22 Jun 2017

Today I teamed up with some of the guys from my team, Team Tanner - Never Alone. I had the goal of riding just over 26 miles so I could say I am above 200 so far for the month. I am going to be honest.... it was hard. That was the farthest I have ridden in over two years. My legs hurt... my bottom is sore... and I had the oppportunity to stop after I reached my goal. But I didn't. I couldn't. I felt the need to fight. I remembered the very reason I joined this cause was to fight for the children that are fighting all sorts of cancers and even though some may win, they have lifelong effects left from treatment. I could not stop at my goal and rode an additional 7 miles!!! I was encouraged to ride by so many generous people that have supported the Children's Cancer ResearchFund through my page! You guys have more than doubled my original of $2500 and it's AWESOME!!!! I am so grateful to have such wonderful people support this cause. I have been humbled by this experience and the outpouring of generosity. THANK YOU!!!!!

  • How challenging is the Great Cycle Challenge?
    16 Jun 2017

Some people have asked me "how hard is it to ride a bike 300 miles?" or they say, "300 miles in 30 days? That's only 10 miles a day!" What they are not thinking is it is 10 miles a day, every day, no skipped days, no rest for your legs or other parts that get a lot of .... friction... To give you an idea, the last time that I rode regularly, I only put in just over 700 miles in 12 months. Also, what happens when life gets in the way? Work, kids, family, and the numerous other distractions in life that can keep us from working on our goals. Today, I rode in the rain. Yesterday I rode in 94 degree heat... but none of that matters... what matters most is that we help fund the researchers and doctors to find a cure for children fighting cancer. Every time I think about it, every time I talk to some one about it and share how I really feel about this cause, I cannot stop my emotion from showing. I cannot stand by and watch my friends feel helpless as they watch their children fighting for their lives.

I am incredibly grateful for the people that have shown support by donating to the Children's Cancer Research Fund. I hope that every mile I crank out, every extra minute I spend on the bike, legs burning, lungs on fire will motivate some one out there to donate to this cause. I hope that the money people donate to the cause from our motivation is enough to fund an extra hour of work for a researcher or doctor to spend an extra hour at work. And maybe, just maybe, that extra hour leads them to the discovery of the key to unlock this mess.

So,... I have been using the GoPro camera I got for Christmas on every ride and have been gathering some pretty fun footage. I can't wait to string it all together to make a video of the first 100 miles! Watch for it coming soon!

Please pass the link for my page along and tell everyone you know about the guy from Eastern North Carolina that is wearing some crazy socks and riding his bike for the kids! Again, THANK YOU to everyone that has donated so far! You are my inspiration to keep on pedaling!

  • Reflecting this Friday afternoon
    26 May 2017

It has been almost 2 years since I've ridden my bike on a regular basis. In those two years I think I've written about 8 miles. When I heard about the great cycle challenge, I saw a post from #TeamTanner Facebook that Tanner Sprague had pledged to ride 50 miles on his bicycle to raise money for the Children's Cancer fund. I thought to myself, "how can you stand by and see children fighting for children and not do anything to help?" Tanner motivated me through his own drive to stand up and do something about it. I know his father, Shane, from work. Tanner and his family, and other families like his deserves all the help we can muster to fight this terrible disease. Thank you so much to everyone who has donated so far through my page or another page! I hope Tanner Sprague, Kaylee Rios, Pepper Lineberry, and other kids like them can be your influence to donate or pick up your dusty bike like I did and go riding and raise awareness and money. I am getting my socks ready to ride and can't wait to start accruing some miles!!!

  • Day 1 after I established my GCC account
    17 May 2017

As I grew up as a Coastie, I was trained to search for people in need and do what I could with the tools and training I had to save people, sometimes from certain death. When several of my friends were told their children had cancer, I felt absolutely powerless to help them. I felt there was nothing I could do to help. I realize that every bit of help that I can provide will take our researchers and scientists at least one step closer to stoping cancer. I was inspired by the Roc Solid Foundation at the gala a few weeks ago and Tanner Sprague who signed up for the GCC to support #TeamTanner. I am determined to do what I can to stop families from the pain and suffering they have to endure as they watch their children suffer the pain of fighting cancer.

I am excited that my page hasn't even been open for 24 hours and people have already donated over $150!! THANK YOU SO MUCH!!! I am so motivated to kick this sucker off and start this journey to taking actions and doing what I can!

  • 17 May 2017

This June, I am taking part in the Great Cycle Challenge to fight kids' cancer!

Why? Because right now, cancer is the biggest killer of children from disease in the United States. Over 15,700 children are diagnosed every year, and sadly, 38 children die of cancer every week.

Kids should be living life, not fighting for it.

So I am raising funds through my challenge to help these kids and support Children’s Cancer Research Fund to allow them to continue their work to develop lifesaving treatments and find a cure for childhood cancer.

Please support me by making a donation to give these kids the brighter futures they deserve.

Your support will change little lives.

    Thank you.

    Stephen
