My Story

This is my second year biking in the Great Cycle Challenge to support research to end childhood cancer. This year is special, as I’ll be riding 300+ miles in September in honor of Eleanor, the daughter of a good friend of mine.

A bit about Eleanor... She was diagnosed with brain cancer at the age of 6. A mysterious headache and persistent pediatrician visits led to the surprise discovery of a brain tumor at the base of her skull – medulloblastoma, the most common malignant brain tumor in children. Eleanor underwent surgery to remove the tumor, followed by radiation and chemotherapy. During 13 months of treatment she attended school (virtually, these were Covid times) when she wasn’t busy with PT, OT, speech appointments or hospital stays. And she let Make -A-Wish know that she wanted a puppy as her reward for being such an excellent patient. She now has happy Willow, a 26 lb Goldendoodle. Thanks to all kinds of support from family and friends and the amazing talent of her medical team, Eleanor is cancer free (so far)!

Now nearly 9 and about to enter 3rd grade, Eleanor is working on being a regular kid again – her hair is growing back, she’s playing soccer on the weekends to rebuild her strength and solidify her balance and reflexes, and she is going to a camp that is helping her catch up on the learning she missed. Eleanor’s family feels tremendously lucky -- sadly, their story is not as unique as you might think, with over 15,700 children diagnosed with cancer every year and 38 children dying from cancer every week. Each of those families need support to ensure that their child receives all of the care and concern they need to battle cancer.

Kids should be living life, not fighting for it.
