Alex Shepherd

In memory of Alex Shepherd. Alex was truly a fighter, and truly an inspiration to all that met him of knew of him. Myself included. Alex, I will give it my all in June, just as you gave everything you had in your fight with cancer. Though you lost your fight, your spirit remains within many many hearts. I am grateful to be riding for you, and all of the children who are fighting cancer, survivors of cancer, and the victims of cancer

My Story

This September, I am taking part in the Great Cycle Challenge to fight kids' cancer!

Why? Because right now, cancer is the biggest killer of children from disease in the United States. Over 15,700 children are diagnosed every year, and sadly, 38 children die of cancer every week.

Kids should be living life, not fighting for it.

So I am raising funds through my challenge to help these kids and support Children's Cancer Research Fund to allow them to continue their work to develop lifesaving treatments and find a cure for childhood cancer.

Please support me by making a donation to give these kids the brighter futures they deserve.

Your support will change little lives.

Thank you.

Terry

  • Completed my 1,000 miles!!
    27 Sep 2020

At the beginning of this month, I wondered if I could finish my 800 mile goal. My riding had not been going as expected, and I had a few injuries and illnesses that had kept my monthly average below 600 miles. But I had faith in the Lord, and he blessed me with good health for this challenge. When I hit the 800 miles I thought, maybe I can make a 1000. Today I rode with my friend Jack Stein. When I hit the 1000 mile mark we were on empty road that allowed us to ride side by side. A pretty special moment👍. I still have 3 days to go, and I will keep going🚴🏼‍♀️.

I know that Alex was into mountain biking and cyclocross. Today was might dirt version of my ride for Alex. It was a beautiful day out, so I kept going until I got a Metric Century/Gran Fondo. It was all I had in me😀

  • Ride for Alex
    18 Sep 2020

Today the gray smoke had been replaced with clouds, and even a few sprinkles. Clean air, and an urge to go out and ride in memory of Slex Shepherd. To experience the pure joy of riding, as Alex once did. To share my thoughts and joys with God, Alex, and all the Angels that lost their battles with Children’s Cancer. To give thanks for the strength they have given me, and for watching over me during my rides.

  • Wildfires
    13 Sep 2020

I never gave thought that I would be riding so many of my rides inside during the Challenge, but wildfires have changed things. The air quality has been pretty bad some days, and it’s just not healthy riding outside in the dirty air. I’ve been riding in my garage, which may not be much better. I ordered a pad so I can move into the house next week if the air hasn’t cleared up. Prayers to all of the men and women battling the blazes. Seems like the whole west coast is on fire. Also pray that all of my fellow riders can ride indoors when needed. Be safe, and let’s keep focused on helping the kids, and Kicking Cancers Butt!

Thank you all so much for the support, and the donations. It was so great this morning to find that I have met my fundraising goals. Love you all. Still have a long way to go on meeting my ride goals, but I’ll keep pedaling away. God willing I will meet or exceed my miles.

    Thank you

  • Day 7
    8 Sep 2020

Short indoor ride in the morning, then spent the day with my grandkids. I have been so fortunate with my health, my children’s health, and my grandchildren’s health. But not everyone can be this fortunate. Cancer is a curse that infects so many people, and it doesn’t spare the children. In my lifetime we may not see a “cure”, but I have seen remarkable gains in the treatment and survival rates. And I do what I can to help with research funding. God has blessed me, and I know that he wants me to continue the Challenge.

Day 8 I get back to longer rides, and will be praying that friends and family will feel it in their hearts tomorrow to help kick cancers butt. 🙏🏼🙏🏼

    4 Sep 2020

My legs were aching this morning, wasn’t sure how well I would do. Midway Into the ride I was feeling great. Statistically I am not 100%, but I feel a little stronger each day. I know that god is with me, and that he will give me the strength to keep going. I could especially feel this towards the end of my ride today (maybe with a little help from Alex).

  • Del Puerto Canyon Ride, into the burn area
    2 Sep 2020

This morning’s ride took me into the burn area for one of California’s largest ever fires. While riding, I couldn’t help but wonder what it was like for the families that had to evacuate. With the fire burning it must have been terrifying to get out, and heartbreaking to think that your home my not be there when you return. Luckily I think all got out safely, and most if not all of the homes were saved. On the way back I was thinking more about WHY I am riding. As bad as it was for the people that had to evacuate, I don’t believe it compares with how devastating it must be for a family to learn their child has cancer. And a home can be rebuilt, but you cannot replace a child lost, or give the childhood back to a child who has had to fight to live because of cancer.

I was a little concerned about my fitness at the start of this challenge, but my ride today was a big dose of something I needed. While the ride did little in adding physical strength/fitness, I did get a huge dose of “resolve”. I am fighting to help these kids, and I know that God, and Alex, will once again give me the strength when I need it

    22 Aug 2020

My wish finally came true, Alex Shepherd side by side on the billboard in Times Square. Alex is the reason I first joined the Great Cycle Challenge, and I have ridden in his memory every year since. He was a truly amazing young man.
