  • Date: Saturday, June 2, 2018
  • Time: 10:00 AM - 3:00 PM
  • Location: 200 Biddle Street or 105 Bank Street, Chesapeake City MD 21915, United States

Event Details

Bike the paved, "motorized vehicle prohibited" C&D Canal Trail, from North Chesapeake City, MD (parking available at 200 Biddle Street - beneath the bridge - or 105 Bank Street), to Delaware City, DE, and back. Round trip is 30+/- miles. Those making the full trip can plan for a half-hour or so break, in Delaware City (perhaps getting an ice cream cone, at the Crabby Dick's shop - or just enjoying the view of PeaPatch Island). At 10 - 12 miles per hour, it's a lovely 1.5 hour one way - 3 hour RT trip. The trip has only two mild hills (I'm 65 and generally use 2nd & 5 gear settings, to go up the hills); there's no shame in walking up either, or both, in either direction. Otherwise, the going is paved, and flat, good for all bicycle types, and the only street traffic is easily negotiated, in Delaware City. Rain Date: June 9

Well, the predicted thunderstorms didn't materialize, in the Chesapeake and Delaware Canal area. Our ride went well, and there wasn't even a drizzle. Thank you to the Parks, for taking the 30 mile tour of the C&D Canal ... and here's to others coming to Chesapeake City, during the month of June, to bicycle for the cause!

Well, Martha, if you're going to come, rain or shine, I'll try to be there ... but, here's the thing ... the rain is supposed to be accompanied by thunderstorms ... and a canal is not a good place to be, in a T-storm. There are not enough places to take shelter ...

The forecast for T-storms on June 2 makes it necessary to postpone the CCBC's GCC Group Ride to June 9th. That said, the Canal will be a 'regular' bicycling location for doing 30 miles on days when the weather doesn't threaten, and departures will be at 10 a.m., for the 30 mile RT. The Canal is also a good location for afternoon rides - leaving around 4:30 p.m. from the Lums Pond South parking lot, and going to Delaware City, and back - an 18 mile ride. Cecil County Bicycling Club Plans to do either ride will be posted here, as 'Group Rides' - feel free to join in any time. 'GCC' jerseys will be worn, so you'll be able to easily spot the CCBC rider(s). Good luck to all with challenge milage and fund commitment goals!

Greetings, Leslie! I'll be doing at least three trips, a week, on the C & D Canal Trail, putting at least 90 miles a week toward my commitment to the GCC. The C & D Trail is very close to my home, and there is no motorized vehicle traffic to worry about. I will post group rides here, and you'd be most welcome company of any of the rides! I'll also post on Facebook, at the Cecil County Bicycling Club page!
