I'm Riding For

Mary Catherine Virnig

Mary Catherine Virnig

Mary was my daughter, she died on Thanksgiving day 2010 from complications of the treatment for ganglionueroblastoma. Mary fought hard for 41/2 years after her diagnosis. She was a great athlete and student, she loved her family and friends. For at least twenty miles of every weeks rides this month I will ride our tandem with MC's empty saddle to raise awareness that children are left never to spend their lives with their families. You can still visit Mary's Caring bridge site and learn of her battle.

My Story

This June, I am taking part in the Great Cycle Challenge to fight kids' cancer!

Why? Because right now, cancer is the biggest killer of children from disease in the United States. Over 15,700 children are diagnosed every year, and sadly, 38 children die of cancer every week.

Kids should be living life, not fighting for it.

So I am raising funds through my challenge to help these kids and support Children's Cancer Research Fund to allow them to continue their work to develop lifesaving treatments and find a cure for childhood cancer.

Please support me by making a donation to give these kids the brighter futures they deserve.

Your support will change little lives.

Thank you.

Arden

My Challenge

    13 Jul 2019

Well our mileage is complete. As per usual I am catching up on all the things that slide by during the month of June. I was back in clinic this week in our small clinic in Garrison. A woman who was visiting from Arizona came in to the clinic with her daughter her S/O and her father. They had come to visit her father because her mother had died this last year and they wanted to spend the fourth of July with him at the lake as they always used to. When she was leaving Arizona she had been developing a sore throat and some conjunctivitis. They felt it was viral and they left. By the time they got here she had a very sore throat, and a horrible conjunctivitis. This appeared to be bacterial and I cultured her and decided to treat her. I asked about her S/O and she said he was just beginning with symptoms, but thought her daughter Addy might need to be treated even though she wasn't symptomatic. I said "Why?" She said she is immuno-compromised, she has cancer. I said "What kind?" She said neuroblastoma. I almost felt sick. I said where was it found? She said" It was in her pelvis wrapped around her aorta, so they could only get about 80-90 % of it. Those of you who know Mary's story know this is almost exactly what and where Mary's tumor was, and how it acted. I told her about Mary, and that I ride for all children with childhood cancer. It was gut wrenching to have her ask if Mary got to do a Make-A-Wish trip. I told her, that Mary's wish had been to be a college student and that not only did she fulfill that but she earned a degree. We talked about what I knew about advances with regards to neuroblastoma and the fact that there now is a known genetic marker that goes along with neuroblastoma and that is one of the first steps in coming up with a more effective tumor therapy. She brightened, they have been through the same treatments that Mary had and the tumor was not gone. But I think that maybe I gave her a little glimmer of hope. There were over 80,000 riders out there this June and they want to help. We raise the money for all of the children who fight cancer. I want to offer a Thank-you to all of those riders who joined me this year and I want to ask you to ride again next year and the next year. Make a challenge to yourself to keep riding until kids like Addy don't have to look forward to their Make-a- Wish trip and instead can look forward to their life without cancer.

Updated Profile photo shows my Great Cycle Challenge jerseys 2015-2019, plus 3 Hero jerseys. The Hero jerseys began in 2017 and are awarded when a rider joins the Peloton by raising > $1500. Also each year I rode with a theme represented in the photo by a teddy bear made from Mary Catherine's 1st cattle show shirt, a Warrior stick, and a tandem bike.

    21 Jun 2019

After 4 days out of the saddle for our Godchild's college graduation in San Jose, California, I have a bit of peddling to to do! (The break was good for saddle sores though) I ended last week exactly at my mileage halfway mark of 563 miles on June 13. Now I've done 153.1 miles in the past 3 days.
