    20 Jun 2017

This is moving backwards a little but I wanted to give you a little up date from the 6th Day in Alaska. I was a little more nervous then I had been before I saw the grizzlies. As I rode I was so focused on the climbing in front of me about (2100 ft) that I didn't soak up what was around me. I was climbing and so hot I finally stopped to rip off clothes as I felt like my head was going to explode. As I turned to my left I realized that there was the most beautiful series of peaks that were beautiful and incredibly majestic. I kind of kicked myself, here I was amidst this incredible beauty but instead of keeping my eyes open to all the beauty around me I had found myself staring at the ground in front of me. SoI challenge you once more look up and open your eyes to all that is right in the world around you.

  • Some Thoughts
    15 Jun 2017

Last year I had the honor of attending the end of the year event that thanked fundraisers for the Children Cancer Research Group. At that event researchers discussed there research and exciting advances they have been able to make with the funds that we all helped raise. Two things really stood out for me first had to do with research in the type of cancer that took our Mary's life. Researchers have found a marker that could be used to identify children at high risk of developing neuroblastoma and could screen for this disease long before it becomes a devastating disease for a child. Amazingly this same tumor marker is now being used to identify certain lung cancers that may be treated in very different ways and has greatly improved the ability to treat this devastating disease also. This highlights what I have always felt about research for children's cancer---it will give us the answers that may be the keys to solving many adult tumors.

The second point it highlighted for me was the success that we had in fund raising last year allowed the research group to fund 6 individual researchers. This is vitally important primary research is the research that is created in those intriguing minds that maybe take an entirely different approach to a problem and come up with an entirely different approach which maybe the real key to ultimately solving these horrible diseases. The CDC which is the primary source in our country for funding to primary research is probably going to suffer a huge cut under the current administration and because of this all the funds we raise are that much more important. Thank-you all for your generous support.

  • June 5th More bears
    12 Jun 2017

Today I wisely albeit unwittingly chose to stay in the car for a rest day. As we came around a very narrow climb there was a mother black bear and her cubs, which would have been on my side of the road on a climb after a bridge. About 50 miles past this area we came upon our first grizzly and then our next grizzly, and another grizzly. I was very happy that I was not riding through the valley of the grizzlies.

  • Buckinghorse to Prophet River There be bears out there.......June 4th
    12 Jun 2017

So we had a good evening last night we had a great camp site and really enjoyed the mid-night sun. We had a bit of a cold night, but overall we were doing well with the plans for the next part of our journey. I left breaking camp to Patti and Sarah. I came out of camp facing a tougher then expected climb so early in the morning. My legs really began to scream, but i did make it to the top and the road smoothed. About 20 miles into the ride I saw a large black lump sitting on the other side of the road. As I approached the lump it rolled to all fours and stared at me with dandelion stems hanging out of his mouth, as I got even with him he woofed and stomped his front feet, which I took as a warning. So I got off my bike and held it up in front of me. He stopped and stared, at which point a very timely Camper trailer came between us and allowed him to return to the brush without loosing face or fur and I not loosing a limb. I went on to ride to Prophet river. As it turns out this stretch of the highway has been straightened from 35 miles to I believe only 21 I finished out the day 47.6 miles today and no bear bites.

  • Heading west ?
    6 Jun 2017

Today Female traveling companions dropped me in Grandview, Saskatchewan. We didn't actually set an end point for the day. I new that Peace river was some where in the future plan so left the women off at a park where they could work out and then catch up to me. I set out with the plan to do as many miles as I could get in so I would run high gear until my legs would get tight, then low gear spin until recover then gear up. 21/2 hrs out I had 50 miles under my belt and had seen nothing of my support team. So I called Sarah I was at the intersection of 49 going east and west and 2 going North. Supposedly we were talking about the same HWY 2 unfortunately we were not. I had turned and headed due north unwittingly. I came to the Peace River Gorge expecting this to be like many of the similar river crossings we had been to I expected this to be a drop into a deep wide valley. No I dropped over a precipice with road construction on the bridge below, it was 1/1/2 miles down dropping 1400 ft then shoot 1/4 mile across the river and start climbing right back up. Shoulder on the way down no shoulder on the way back up. At about 1100 ft my phone starts ringing it rings again, stops rings again stops rings again stops. Finally I'm at the peak. Stop get off the bike wait for might my heart rate to dropback under redline. I call Patti, That's when we discover that I'm about 70 miles NE of where Patti and Sarah are at. Turns out we don't always have cell communication So Patti not knowing what I had just done suggested that I turn around and start heading back towards them I politely refused.. The she thought I should look for something for them to punch in a location or address to find me Peace River Alberta didn't seem to help. Finally I went with an interpretative center at the bottom of the bridge. When I got to the bottom, there was the interpretative center but no signal. I went inside and a wonderful woman let me use her landline to call Patti and let them know how to find me 63.8 miles ridden

Day 2 Canada Eh? Made it through customs, even though we nearly had to duct tape Patti's mouth that we had one can of bear spray on board. I woke up early and rode from Weyburn to Milestone Saskatchewan which was about 33.8 miles. The women were a bit skeptical about such low output for the number of hours I had been riding but they did not appreciate the prairie winds. I rode with massive transport trains on my right and huge double freight semis on my left aand in the silence in between Meadowlarks cheering meon in the bright rising sun.

    6 Jun 2017

Today we left on the Alaskan adventure. We left Onamia not to much later then planned, when we made to Frazee, MN. I hopped out and rode to Moorhead 33.8 Miles with the little backpack. Dodging orange cones all the way. Only problem I have to modify the red flashers for the back of the bike they flew loose when I hit the rode cracks of the shoulders. Some tape will be in order.

  • My Plan For this Year
    25 May 2017

Below you will see pictures of my beautiful girl and my plan, for my ride this year. The picture of the Teddy Bear is a bear that was made from the first shirt Mary wore to show cattle in when she was 5 or 6 y.o a friends mother made special bears for each of us in our family. So fittingly this year will be the bear ride and Mary's Bear will ride with me. To start the 30 days we will be moving Sarah Mary's younger sister to Anchorage, Alaska to start her residency in Family Medicine. We will be driving I will ride 2-3 hrs, in the morning then Patti and Sarah, will pick me up we travel on for the day and we will repeat the process hop skipping across Canada and southern Alaska. I will try and update daily but we do not know how well our coverage will be. I am hoping that real bears won't find me to interesting.

This June, I am taking part in the Great Cycle Challenge to fight kids' cancer!

Why? Because right now, cancer is the biggest killer of children from disease in the United States. Over 15,700 children are diagnosed every year, and sadly, 38 children die of cancer every week.

Kids should be living life, not fighting for it.

So I am raising funds through my challenge to help these kids and support Children’s Cancer Research Fund to allow them to continue their work to develop lifesaving treatments and find a cure for childhood cancer.

Please support me by making a donation to give these kids the brighter futures they deserve.

Your support will change little lives.

    Thank you.
