My Story

4 Jun 2020

In September 2020, I will once again take part in the Great Cycle Challenge to fight kids' cancer! This will be my second year participating and I've raised my riding goal (601 miles) AND fundraising goal ($10,000).

Why? Because right now, cancer is the biggest killer of children from disease in the United States. Over 15,700 children are diagnosed every year, and sadly, 38 children die of cancer every week.

Kids should be living life, not fighting for it.

So I am raising funds through my challenge to help these kids and support Children's Cancer Research Fund to allow them to continue their work to develop lifesaving treatments and find a cure for childhood cancer.

Please support me by making a donation to give these kids the brighter futures they deserve.

Your support will change little lives.

Thank you.

My Challenge

  • Today is the Last Official Day of the 2020 Great Cycle Challenge
    30 Sep 2020

Well, where did September go? It's already the 30th and I still have miles to ride but I have many of those miles mapped out already in Montana and one more ride before we head out to pass the 50% mark.

A VERY HEARTY THANK YOU to each of your who helped make my fundraising a success! I keep saying that I am both humbled and honored and it's pure truth. I am Blessed by the outpouring of support to help the kids (and others truth be told).

The attached picture is of one of the many kiddos fighting cancer.

4-year-old Harriet has been battling t-cell acute lymphoblastic leukemia for 13 months.

Since her diagnosis, this brave little lady has endured rounds of intensive chemotherapy, 8 x blood transfusions, 14 x lumbar punctures, 2 x bone marrow biopsies, 112 x port accesses and shots, 5 x ER visits and the list goes on.

Harriet is currently finishing her first (of several) cycles of maintenance treatment, and she is gaining more strength and energy every day.

She still has 16 months of treatment to go, but...

Harriet is KICKING CANCER'S BUTT! ❤️

And her mom also has a message for you:

"Thank you so much for riding this month.

We are all so thankful for your dedication to raising awareness and funds for childhood cancer research."

So telling you how humbled and honored and BLESSED I am to have the support of such amazing people is an understatement.

I ride for kids like Harriet. To help find a cure once and for all for cancer.

Thank you again for your support. You can still follow my ride progress until the end of October and I fully plan to hit at least 601 miles!

    God Bless You!

    Linda

    27 Sep 2020

I wanted to take a few minutes this beautiful Sunday morning here in the PNW to thank each and every one of you for your support in helping me raise funds for the Children's Cancer Research Foundation.

I came across the Great Cycle Challenge a year ago this past April and figured I could do that so I signed up to ride and pledged 300 miles. The caveat to that was that I had two weeks to ride those miles because we had planned to participate in a motorcycle ride in Ohio with some fellow Rotarians from my club the Rotary Club of Motorcycling Rotarians. Two weeks, 300 miles. Piece of cake, right? Well, plans changed and we ended up not traveling to Ohio so I upped my pledged miles and fundraising goal and ended the month with more miles and a higher goal!

This year with life being disrupted by COVID I figured I would double my miles and go for a higher fundraising goal. Thanks to ALL OF YOU, I have met that fundraising goal and for the last 4 days of the challenge month, I'm going to raise that goal by $1,000.

I am so humbled by the support and it means a lot to have supporters and "cheerleaders" like you to help kids.

I won't complete 601 miles by September 30 but luckily the challenge gives us the opportunity during the following month to complete our miles! And that's the plan - finish my miles in other parts of the country! You'll see me riding in Yellowstone in just two short weeks and then from there various parts around the country.

Thank you again for your support. There are not enough words or hugs for all of it and I appreciate you.

  • From Smoke-Filled Air to Torrential Downpours
    24 Sep 2020

The Blessing we have right now is no more smoke filled air AND as odd as it sounds for those not used to our rainy weather - RAIN and it's very much needed. Helpful for the fires and the extra dry weather that we've been having this year. But (and no excuses, truly) that also means no riding. But I will prevail and I will continue riding until my riding goal is met!

Thank you again for your support, I'll never be able to say it enough. Helping kids (and adults) be able to live is first and foremost something that I love participating in!

  • Pedaling Along
    23 Sep 2020

When you drive around the valley that we live in, it always seems to take a long time to get from point A to point B. Now take that same drive and ride it on a bicycle and it seems like those long car rides aren't as far as they seem! It's silly. Sunday I vowed I was going to ride 67 miles and fell short by 4 miles. I won't beat myself up over it - it was still the longest bike ride I had ever pedaled.

Yes, waylayed by heavily smoke filled skies for a week and another week being Blessed by a visit with my cousin, Ariana, who traveled from Colorado to Washington to visit. I think we may have bored her (just kidding) - we are a quiet bunch around here.

I keep reminding myself that the kids (and adults) going through cancer treatment have a much tougher row to hoe than I do riding my bicycle. So I keep pedaling. I've almost hit the half way mark of the goal that I set for the number of miles. Whatever isn't completed by the 30th will be completed in October in various parts of the country outside of our valley.

But for now, I keep on pedaling because I know that every mile that I ride, it will help researchers finally find a cure for this killer called cancer. So, having said that, I am riding to #kickcancersbutt #greatcyclechallenge2020

Thank you again for your support. It means the world to me that folks like you have the confidence in me to complete my fundraising and riding to help the kids. I humbly thank you from the bottom of my heart and I am honored to have your support.

I have another $1200 to raise to meet my fundraising goal but I think I can make that happen too by the 30th of September.

  • Day 1 of NO SMOKE
    20 Sep 2020

Today was the first day without smoke hanging in the air! Sadly there are still fires burning east of the mountains in Washington and Oregon and a couple of big ones in Oregon on the west side of the Cascades. California - too many to keep track of.

Today was a shorter ride but it certainly felt great to be riding again. Partly cloudy, but I'll take it. Tomorrow will be a much longer ride. The old saying .... "I've got a long way to go and a short time to get there" rings true for the miles that I have left. Today was just a hair over 30 as Jim braved riding with me to Anacortes!

  • Day 6 of Smoky Skies
    17 Sep 2020

We are now into day 6 of the air quality being very much not ideal. I've been riding in my head but that doesn't do much towards actual miles ridden! It is a tad better today than it was yesterday (at least here in Olympia). We'll see what it is in La Conner this afternoon.

I want to thank you for your support and am very humbled by it beyond measure. I am truly Blessed by you and am looking forward to finishing my miles - even if it's after we hit the road (we'll have until the end of October to finish miles due to weather and fires) on October 1.

    Please stay safe and happy.

God Bless you abundantly for helping support the research needed to put an end to the scourge of cancer.

  • Day 3 of Smoke Filled Air
    14 Sep 2020

No excuses but heavy smoke from the wildfires around the state and where we are the northern part of Washington we have again air so smoke heavy that visibility is very low. We are saying prayers for those fighting the fires, those living near the fires, those evacuated, those who have lost everything because of the fires.

  • Rough Days Due to Fires
    13 Sep 2020

My plan to ride an average of 35 miles a day went out the window yesterday morning when we woke up to smoke so bad you couldn't see very far in front of you and the health hazard goes unsaid.

Needless to say, my plan is still to finish by September 25 so I'll just be riding longer distances in a shorter amount of days. My goal is to not let anyone down by not completing my miles and maybe more :)

This picture is what yesterday and today look like. But there are others off much worse because they are in the middle or very close to all the fires burning on the west coast.

    10 Sep 2020

26.2 miles today! Rode into La Conner to mail a couple of items and then made my way home by way of Mount Vernon and around the valley farms. Dairy farms and hot days are not a good mix. But as I was riding past those dairy farms I thought that I had nothing to complain about because someone going through chemo and radiation treatments for cancer go through much worse so riding past those dairy farms wasn't necessarily worth the smell but worth the miles accomplished.

  • Successful First Day!
    7 Sep 2020

Yesterday was a success in my book! Just over 50 miles riding around the Skagit Valley farm fields - seeing A LOT of corn, blueberries and more. Morning started out with a marine layer of cool and foggy but then warmed up nicely! Spotted a hawk, took his picture a couple of times but the third time he was having none of it and flew off!

  • September 5 is Almost Here!
    2 Sep 2020

So the Great Cycle Challenge for 2020 officially started today. However, having family visiting slows things down just a tad.

I will be starting my ride of 601 miles officially on Saturday, September 5. My goal is to finish ALL of my miles by September 25 if not sooner.

I would be humbled if you would shared the link to my page and help me get to $10,000 as I ride for not only the kiddos but for the adults as well. It's time to put an end to the scourge of cancer once and for all.

  • Riding Begins in 17 Days!
    15 Aug 2020

It's already the middle of August! Riding officially begins on Sept 1 and I will be beginning my riding on September 6 (family visiting until the 5th)! I'm excited to ride again this year and bring change for the better to the ugly world of cancer. I'm riding for all the kiddos that have the unfortunate circumstances to have cancer but also for the adults in my life who have had cancer, who have died from cancer and who are fighting cancer AGAIN because it is back...

No one gets out alive at the end of the day but kids deserve the chance to live life. They deserve a chance to grow old like the rest of us so this is why I ride. To help rid the world of the scourge of cancer once and for all.

    7 Sep 2019

I've re-upped my commitment to ride in the Great Cycle Challenge but in June 2020!

I hope that folks will once again support my efforts to raise funds for children's cancer research.

A HUGE THANK YOU and shout out to everyone who supported my efforts this year. Without your support I wouldn't have been able to add almost $7,000 to the ability to help put an end to the scourge of cancer, especially in kiddos.

Looking forward to riding again in June 2020!
