Jackie Klear Massey

Jackie Klear Massey

Dedicated to Jackie, who lost her battle to AVM on February 3, 2019. Jackie was an avid bike rider and Great Cycle Challenge participant the last several years. Her husband Danny and Team Jackie want to wipe out childhood cancer.

My Story

This June, I am taking part in the Great Cycle Challenge to fight kids' cancer!

Why? Because right now, cancer is the biggest killer of children from disease in the United States. Over 15,700 children are diagnosed every year, and sadly, 38 children die of cancer every week.

Kids should be living life, not fighting for it.

So I am raising funds through my challenge to help these kids and support Children's Cancer Research Fund to allow them to continue their work to develop lifesaving treatments and find a cure for childhood cancer.

Please support me by making a donation to give these kids the brighter futures they deserve.

Your support will change little lives.

Thank you.

Daniel

My Challenge

  • Down to The Wire!!!
    26 Jun 2019

OK, Friends, we are getting down to the wire! I greatly appreciate all the donations you all have made, and I have no doubt about passing my riding goal, after I have increased it several times, now at 200 miles, and a few days left to complete it. However, my donation goal has changed to be the #1 fundraiser in the State of OHIO! I was in first place for a while, but there is another energetic and dedicated guy out there who has passed me by almost $500! I just cannot let that happen! So, I am asking again, to dig deep and help me reach my goal, and support Children's Cancer Research Fund at the same time. I am doing it for the kids, with a little self-satisfaction along the way.

  • Increased goal to 180 miles
    24 Jun 2019

So, my brother (younger by 12 years) likes to pride himself on the fact that he rides mountain bike trails in Michigan, where he lives. And he has the doctor, EMS and hospital bills to prove it. So he sent me this FB challenge:

"At this point, between weather, work and other non-riding activities, you have more miles than me this year. I'm impressed!

But now it's time to step it up a notch, since you asked for it.

I'll donate $XXX in Jackie's memory for you to add 50 miles. AND one ride must be over 20 miles.

They call it a challenge, right? You in?"

So, of course I accepted the challenge, but I informed him that he has to ride the 20 mile ride with me. So we have it planned for Saturday, with Sunday as a rain date. not much June left, but GAME ON!

Made a stop at the Ottawa K of C hall, rode around the parking lot just to get a few more yards in the ride. Then I remembered the monument to my Aunt Ilo Mae (Klear) Cox, my Dad's sister, who passed away some 15 years ago, from lung cancer. The inscription reads: "In loving memory of Ilo Mae Cox and all deceased members & wives donated by Donald Cox and Family". Dedicated the ride to her.

Today I did my longest ride at 15.4 miles, I know, small potatoes for some GCC riders, but a big deal for me. I've passed my original goal of 100 miles! Now, on to get the 20 additional miles challenged by the Glandorf Lions Club. Anyone else want to give me a (reasonable LOL) challenge with a donation to help fight kids' cancer? I will take it on.

A great day for a ride, in between potential rains, but finished ahead of it. Stopped to visit Jackie. Mary Ellen and I have been so inspired by Jackie's love for The Great Cycle Challenge as a means to help fight Children's Cancer. Doing it for the kids.

Rode to Jenny's house again still no breakfast, but she and Tyson rode with me for their GCC ride of the day. Had a great time. Then finished my ride using the road that was closed the last trip, no detour this time.

Rode to Jenny's house and said hello to her and Tyson. Then found a local road closed, but I had to see for myself there was water over the road. Cost me another 2 miles to go back around it. But now I am 2 miles closer to my goal!

Almost whimped out because it was 49deg outside, but went out anyway. Took a tour of the countryside first 4.4 miles, then into town. Visited Jackie, her Grandpa Klear, her Grandma and Grandpa Hanneman at the cemetery, then on to Grandma Klear's house, and back home. Jackie has been such an inspiration to me to keep riding too help fight kid's cancer.
