Lorraine, Nat, Callie, Charlie and all kids

Childhood cancer has touched my life through a good friend, Jay E., whose son, Charlie, has successfully recovered. Charlie graduated from high school and will attend the college this fall. Yea!!! Charlie is a great kid who plays video games, hangs out with his family and makes stuff in his Dad's shop. I hope there are more kids like Charlie who successfully beat cancer.

My Story

9 Sep 2020

Why I ride - The biopsy results would be back in 4-6 weeks. Jay shared the news with us at our weekly Friday morning breakfasts. His son would play computer games that shot zombies, a metaphor for the cancer cells. We would listen and offer our support. As a friend, I was hoping that I could do more. It was 2015 and Eric Walcher, another member of our breakfast group, suggested that we ride in the Great Cycle Challenge to support Children's Cancer Research Fund. Done!

The biopsy results were negative. Jay's son was cancer free!

His son has not let the cancer define him. A recent graduate from high school, a Destination Imagination State Champion and Global Finals participant and a pretty good fantasy football player (I'm in 3 three leagues with him). He is attending the UofM this fall.

A child's cancer upends a family. You will do anything to make them better.

I ride with the hope that more kids successfully win their battle against kid's cancer. Please donate today.

    Hi,

I'm not an endurance person. Never ran a marathon or even a half-marathon. Longest bike ride before GCC this year was 57 miles at the Tour de Tonka last year and before that 40 miles.

At the beginning of summer, inspired by the kids, I challenged myself to ride 100 miles. I connected with Adam and Luke at Mayo Sports Medicine and they setup a training and nutrition plan which was essential to preparing for this ride. Training up to six days a week, up at 5:30 AM in the morning for many of the rides. It was a challenge.

The kids are my primary motivation. When my legs are tired, and my energy zapped, I think about the kids and find the energy to train and keep going.

I think about the kids a lot on my rides. Grateful for those who successfully beat cancer including Charlie and Lorraine.

Saddened but inspired by those kids this did not make. Two of the kids in particular are Katie H. and Callie.

13 year-old Katie Hageboeck battled cancer in 1979 and was saving money for a 10-speed bike. She was my sister's age. Before she died, she asked for the money to go to help other kids like her and donated her bike money to Children's Cancer Research Fund. It was a little known fund back then. Amazing what a humble, thoughtful donation turned into with over 134,000 people riding fight kids' cancer. I think about Katie on almost every ride and hope that more kids beat cancer.

Callie was a GCC ambassador a few years ago, In 3rd grade, the same age as my daughter. Her mom would write posts about her journey with cancer. It was heart breaking. One of the last posts, after Callie was home in hospice, was that Callie was doing her homework and being a kid. I just hope that all of the money raised will make a difference and find a cure, a vaccine, something to improve the lives of the kids.

Many thanks to my family especially Kristina for her support and giving me the time and space to train.

Many thanks to my training partners including Bill, Dave, Chris and Alan, my endurance advisor, Jay and bike guru Eric. Thanks to my riding partners tomorrow including Dave, who will ride the full 100 miles with me, Mark, Jay, Bill, Chris and Cousin Woody. Thank you to the WC4 team for their commitment to this cause including my daughters.

Thank you for all of my sponsors. You are making a difference and helping fund critical phase I research.

Huge thank you to Chloe Walbruch, Megan and the entire GCC team. Your tireless effort and patience with my social media questions make a big difference.
