Zach Sobiech

Upon watching the movie "Clouds" on Disney+ I immediately knew I wanted to honor Zach Sobiech in this year's challenge. Zach taught us how to make the most out of life and how we should live every day to the fullest and cherish every moment. Upon reaching out to his mother, Laura, and getting her permission, I started Team Clouds! To further honor Zach, all fundraising done by Team Clouds will go to the Zach Sobiech Osteosarcoma Fund (or ZSOF for short) which was set up by Zach and his family before his passing. As a part of the Children’s Cancer Research Fund, the ZSOF allowed Zach to direct proceeds from his music and other fundraisers held in his honor to help researchers find better treatments to prevent and cure this devastating disease. Since it's creation, it has raised nearly three million dollars and has help fund eight potentially groundbreaking projects as well as a national clinical trial to test a new drug to treat Osteosarcoma!

My Story

31 Aug 2021

This September will be my fourth year participating in the Great Cycle Challenge!

Having family members who have battled cancer, this cause really hits close to home for me. Growing up I always tried to raise money for St. Jude's and upon participating in this challenge, I was SHOCKED to learn that the federal funding for cancer only provides less than 4% for childhood cancer. By donating through the Great Cycle Challenge, I knew the money would make a massive difference and impact towards childhood cancer.

Despite only 4% of federal funding for cancer going towards childhood cancer, it's the leading cause of death by disease (or second after accidents) in children under the age of 19 in the United States. Every day in the US there is 43 children diagnosed with cancer. Across the world there is over 300,000 new cases of childhood cancer every year, that's over 800 new cases every day.

They are estimating about 10,500 children under the age of 15 will be diagnosed with cancer in 2021 and nearly 1,200 children will sadly lose their battles with cancer this year. Your donations will continue to help further research and treatments to lower these numbers and hopefully one day develop a cure. In the mid-1970's only 58% of those diagnosed with childhood cancer were able to live up to or past 5 years after getting diagnosed. Since then, thanks to major advancements, 84% of children will survive 5 years or more.

Since the beginning of this organization, nearly 40 MILLION dollar has been raised and nearly 26 MILLION miles have been biked! Together we can create a world without cancer, a world where children are living their lives, not fighting for it.

Thank you.
