My Story

This June, I am taking part in the Great Cycle Challenge to fight kids' cancer!

Why? Because right now, cancer is the biggest killer of children from disease in the United States. Over 15,700 children are diagnosed every year, and sadly, 38 children die of cancer every week.

Kids should be living life, not fighting for it.

So I am raising funds through my challenge to help these kids and support Children's Cancer Research Fund to allow them to continue their work to develop lifesaving treatments and find a cure for childhood cancer.

Please support me by making a donation to give these kids the brighter futures they deserve.

Your support will change little lives.

Thank you.

Marilyn

  • Crossed the virtual finish line!
    12 Jul 2019

I completed a 30 mile ride on my stationary bike today, then checked my log and realized I had just one mile to go to finish my 500 mile goal! So I climbed back on and sprinted the last mile!

  • Oozing into July
    2 Jul 2019

As I feared, my week in a hotel with 12 hour class days really mucked up my pedaling schedule. I'll need a little over a week of July to hit 500 miles, but I'm going to do it! Got 30+ done today.

    26 Jun 2019

I'm at an educational conference this week and wondering how I'm going to get my miles done. My month might need to stretch into the first week of July. But I will get them done! So grateful to my donors for contributing to this important cause!

    19 Jun 2019

I had to break my pedaling into two sessions, today - morning and evening - in order ro get to work on time, but I logged slightly over 30 miles. If I can fit days like this in more often, I’ll get back on schedule, and even ahead of it!

    17 Jun 2019

Yikes! Three full days of no biking, but lots and lots and lots of fast walking (dang, I wish I’d worn my FitBit) as one of the behind-the-scenes folks executing a large annual meeting. This definitely knocked me well off schedule, so I’ll have lots of catching up to do.

  • A little behind but getting momentum
    10 Jun 2019

According to my weekly update from GCC, I’m off my first week goal by 6%. But I’m building endurance and patience for the stationary bike (it is, after all, the “dreadmill” of bicycling), and should be able to catch up gradually. I’d rather not try to pull a one-day century ride on the FitDesk!

  • Gotta get cranking
    9 Jun 2019

Pun intended. My first week was a little overbooked, and I’m now running behind my planned distance/week. I’ll have to make up that shortfall over the coming weeks, but I’ll get it done somehow! I just learned that I might have to attend a one-week training this month. Here’s hoping the hotel has a cycle! Otherwise I’ll have to put mine in the car.

    6 Jun 2019

I managed 15 miles yesterday, but only 10 today. I went to bed quite late (1:30 a.m.), and got up four hours later to finish writing a presentation. By the time I got on the bike tonight, I knew I didn’t have 20 miles in me. I’m running behind schedule for this first week, but I’ll catch up!

    4 Jun 2019

Yeesh - squeezing long rides into these first few days of June has been a challenge. I had obligations both weekend days, and evening meetings the first two weeknights, so I’m already running behind schedule on mileage. But the month is young and I’ll catch it up!

    3 Jun 2019

Only 10 miles today. I did a 5K walk this morning (at 17:50/mile), then led an afternoon worship service. Not much time or energy left for the bike! I’ll get caught up.

  • Off and running! ...or pedalling
    2 Jun 2019

I had to divide my first day’s riding in half, because of an early morning commitment. But I got in 23 miles! The photo below shows the meter after my second ride. I’ll try to collage the first and second pics together and replace this one.

  • Getting ready
    29 May 2019

Well, the Wahoo tracker is not going to work, so I'm going to have to post photos of my old-school meter to prove my distance each day/week (maybe a mosaic of each day's photos at the end of a week?). Unless, of course, I win the lottery and purchase a Peloton or a Concept 2 bike ERG in the next 2 days. :)

  • Tracker found!
    8 May 2019

I mentioned earlier that I have a pretty old-school set-up, and was looking for a good tracking app for my stationary bikes (a Fitdesk and a mountain bike mounted on an indoor trainer!). I found one! I ordered a Wahoo Cadence Sensor that adheres to a bike's pedal crank magnetically, and talks to Strava (and other workout apps). So I will be able to generate reports on my progress through June.

  • Any good tracking apps for stationary bikes?
    3 May 2019

My 500 miles in June will be accomplished mostly on a stationary bike. It has an old-school battery powered digital meter, but it's not blue tooth enabled or anything fancy like that. Any recommendations for a cheap app/phone tracker that can be rigged to my ride?

I'm a little nervous about upping my mileage commitment for June, because I'm also training for a 50 mile walk in October. And have to fit in pesky little things like a job, sleep, etc. ;) But let's do this! I'm aiming for 500 now.
