My Story

9 May 2019

So, I had planned on riding in the challenge last year but was waylaid by some pesky coronary artery plagues. That has all been fixed and I am ready to ride. I am passionate about knowing that we are doing something to bring better outcomes for children worldwide. The story of Nat touched my heart. When I signed up for Team Nat she had entered hospice and this brave 15 year old passed away in April. (You can read more about her on the team button above.)

I am overwhelmed by the support that I have received so far and so thankful for my sponsors. The rides that you see below are training rides for the event starting in June. I am grateful to God for getting me through the surgery last summer so that I am able to complete the challenge this year. Thank you for being a part of this effort.

  • Final GCC day
    30 Jun 2019

Today is the final day of the challenge and thanks to all of you the goals that I set were reached and surpassed. I thank each one of you who contributed and you were the inspiration that drove me to get the miles in and even surpass the goal that I set. This week I rode almost two hundred miles and completed a metric century (62.1237 - 100 km) miles and a standard century (100 miles). I could not have done it without your encouragement and the fact that you put your faith in me to ride. So, thank you so much for making this a successful year. Also thanks to God that He gave me the strength and desire to ride, not to mention a rewired heart that allowed me to ride. Love you all and thanks again.

  • Starting week 4
    23 Jun 2019

The last full week of the ride and I am so grateful to all who have sponsored me. Even though I reached my ride goal I am planning on continuing this week and hope to put in a least a hundred more miles. I know that I couldn't have done it without your encouraging words and donations. God is good and my heart is great. Looking forward to continuing to log the miles after the challenge. I will send one more update at the end of the week but I point to all those who shared this journey financially and they deserve all the praise.

  • Starting Week 3
    16 Jun 2019

I begin week 3 of the challenge and I am in awe of the support that I have gotten, not only in contributions but also in words of encouragement. When I originally set a goal of 250 miles for the month I planed that I only needed to ride a little over 60 miles a week and believed that I could do that. As the month of May came and I was able to get out on the bike I realized that 250 miles would not be a problem, so I set a personal goal of 100 miles a week. At the end of week 2 I had ridden slightly over 360 miles. Some highlights of the week are seeing many turkeys and on several occasions 4 hens with about 30 chicks. Also some deer and the obligatory “flat” snake (run over). Probably the highlight though was being passed by a tractor trailer hauling pigs. All in all it was a great week and I am ready to start again this week. Again I thank all who contributed to the cause of finding cancer cures for children and I am in awe of the fantastic job that was done on Wednesday raising almost $1,600. Across the challenge there was over 1.3 million raised so the 900,000 matching donations were allocated at 66.6 percent. Again thank you and there are two more weeks to go.

  • Starting Week 2
    9 Jun 2019

As I am waiting for the rain to stop so I can ride I will update my progress. This is the start of week 2 for me since I started a day late. I had a great week last week and surpassed my personal goal of 100 miles. I am ready to start the new week and hope to get in at least another 100. When I was in Haiti recently, I heard that one of the children seen in the clinic had been diagnosed with osteosarcoma. Osteosarcoma was the kind of cancer that Nathalie, the inspiration for Team Nat, died from on April. As I ride I think about the children I have known that have had some form of cancer. As a youth it was rare that we would hear about children and cancer and today it is something that touches all of us. That is why I took on this challenge. The medical field had made great strides in lessening the mortality of childhood cancer but the goal would be to eliminate the mortality and the disease itself. I know that I am close to both my fundraising and mile goals but I would ask you to consider contributing to this worthy cause. Wednesday, June 12, is "Kick Cancer's Butt Day", and all donations will be matched up to $900,000 across the event. Thank you to all those who have supported me and those in the wings.

    2 Jun 2019

I got home from Haiti this morning at 2:00 AM and just completed my first ride of the challenge. As I peddled this morning my thoughts went to all who have supported my ride and the inspiration and motivation I have received because of their generosity. Thank you each one for supporting me through this month. God bless and be with you all.
