My Story

28 Aug 2020

Last year's goal was to ride the distance of the Grand Canyon: 277 miles / 443 km. This year I wanted to make it back as well: 544 mi / 886 km. I met my distance goal in June and thanks to my awesome friends and family I met my fundraising goal of $ 1,000. A HUGE THANK YOU to everyone who donated!

And here we are in September, still not much to do in Covid times, but at least I am back to bike riding outdoors! My two vacations were cancelled and it's uncertain, when I can travel outside of the US again. Therefore, I decided to use my vacation time to participate in the September GCC.

I am planning to ride 544 mi / 886 km in September on country roads in Massachusetts. Ride with me for moral support!

After doubling the distance goal, I am also doubling my fundraising goal and I am hoping to raise $ 2,000. If you can please consider making a donation. $1, $5, $50? Even a small donation will make a difference and is highly appreciated.

Thank you very much!

  • I DID IT! 1,000 miles / 1,600 km ridden in September to raise awareness and funds to fight cancer!
    1 Oct 2020

I had 67 miles left to go this morning and I started with 25 miles in Watopia on Zwift, while it was pouring down hoping for better weather in the afternoon. I got lucky and the sun came out, so I headed for my 42 mile loop to get to 1,000 miles. It was slow ride though: strong winds, puddles, slippery leaves, squirrels, chipmunks, and lots of sticks made the ride feel like an obstacle course. I made it back home with a total of exactly 1,000 miles about 30 minutes after sunset.

I don't recall that I ever cycled that much in a single month. Not even back in the day, when I still participated in races and went to Mallorca with friends for a week in the spring to kick-off the season. I feel utterly exhausted and sore legs and numb butt are screaming for some rest. But I did it! 💥

And overall we raised over $4,000!!! 🥳🍾

Knowing that each mile contributed $4 to fight cancer makes up for the current pain. I greatly appreciate everyone's support and generous donations to this fundraiser!! You are awesome! Thank you very much!!! 🥰

    25 Sep 2020

With today's rides I have 784 miles ridden for the Great Cycle Challenge during the month of September. I am trying to reach 1,000 miles. It feels rough. So, please ride with me or cheer me on.

I am also very close to reach a fundraising milestone of $4,000 thanks to many donation from amazing generous friends! We are at $3,910, so only short by $90. If you can and would like to support a great cause while make my remaining 216 miles count and less painful, consider donating to my fundraiser. Every dollar makes a difference and is highly appreciated!

    23 Sep 2020

Another 41 miles and I reached 661 mi / 1,057 km. So, I exceeded the new goal of 1,000 km.

Winds at at 20 to 30 mph made it feel like riding in Kansas. On he bright side: the tail winds were fun!

Should I be going for 1000 miles next? 339 miles left to ...8 days left to ride...42 miles a day. That's a stretch...

  • Third time's a charm: A new record on my favorite loop!
    19 Sep 2020

This was my third attempt to improve my personal record on my favorite Loop, the CRW Lexington Revolutions M.

First time: a 10 minute water and pee break ruined my time.

Second time: a pothole stopped me after everything was going great.

Third time's a charm: It was a bit on the chilly side, so no water break needed and I felt ready to race!

I improved my time by more that 15 minutes with 18.3 mi/hr (29.29 km/h) on the loop ....I am exhausted, but happy.

  • I reached my distance goal on my last vacation day!!!
    16 Sep 2020

I had 34 miles left to reach my goal. So, on my last vacation day I checked out another new route with some fun company. About 34 miles into the ride we stopped to celebrate with ice cream from Bedford Farm in Concord.

564 miles ridden, so I reached my goal of 544 miles!

    That's 544 miles / 870 km in just two weeks :)

Help me celebrate and buy me a beer! Or even better: pitch in and donate to my fundraiser and I will get beer myself :)

    Hefeweizen.

    THANK YOU!!!

I will be trying to reach 1,000 km / 625 miles as this would be a very nice round number.

  • Taking the shiny new Hero Jersey out to the Cape on the Shining Sea Bikeway
    15 Sep 2020

I got a shiny new Hero Jersey after raising $2,500. It arrived yesterday and we took it out on special ride to the Cape on the Shining Sea Bikeway from Falmouth to Woods Hole.

The path was very scenic and we passed by a couple of ponds, marches, the ocean and we even saw some baby swans, which were not small anymore, but still gray.

And a Lobster Roll for lunch along the way :)

510 miles ridden, 34 to go to reach my goal!

A HUGE THANK YOU again to everyone who supported already. You are awesome!

  • Exploring a new route again with a stop at the Gropius house in Lincoln, MA
    13 Sep 2020

I did not feel up for another speeding attempt, so I decided to take it slow and explore a new route. It was a nice ride on mostly super quiet roads :)

I figured out how to get voice commands for the route from my Garmin via my phone, which made the navigation really easy.

And luckily the new tube is fine :D

I was pretty exhausted by the end of it. That's why I look cross eyed for my photo stop at the Gropius house. I did not know that Gropius lived (and died) in Massachusetts.

433 miles ridden, 111 to go to reach my goal!

  • Crushing it.....until I hit a pothole
    11 Sep 2020

Today I started a new attempt at speeding along the CRW Revolutions loops trying to beat my record, after a 10 minute water break ruined my time on my previous attempt.

The weather was perfectly chill, no heat advisory forcing me to responsibly fill up on water. So, I was happily speeding along and I hit a couple of personal records along the route.

Everything was going great until I hit a pothole hard on 225 :(

Turns 225 is a terrible place to have a flat tire. I wobbled back to the boat ramp road for the Concord River to deal with the flat tire realizing that I have the tube, but.....no pump. No one speeding by seemed inclined to stop. So, I had to call my partner to rescue me :(

While rescue was on the way, a nice cyclist with a CO2 inflator stopped and helped me fill my tube! Much appreciated dear stranger from Medford : )

Sadly, I did not get a new record on the CRW revolution segment, but still 30 miles towards my goal of 544 miles. 175 miles left to go!

    I will try again.

  • A (Metric) Century Ride
    8 Sep 2020

I started out with my favorite loop modifying it ever so slightly, so it actually matches up with the CRW Lexington Revolutions M loop, as I wanted to compare my time and I came in Top 3 All-time Women and 13th All-time :)

Afterwards I added the shorter loop around Hanscom base to get to 100 km for today. I had to backtrack the Minute Man a couple of times to finish that goal, but I made it!

The picture is at the Bedford Depot...about 10 miles before completing the ride.

    4 Sep 2020

I tried a somewhat new route to try out the GPS, if I actually don't know where to go and it went well. It did great on "country" roads and it got me lot in the city in Bedford.

The highlight: I finally managed to stop at Great Brook Farm for ice cream for lunch.

    3 Sep 2020

It looked like it might be another rainy day here in Boston, but I got lucky. No rain!!!

Technology can make life on the bike so much easier.

I tried the new Garmin 830 to navigate - on my usual route to see how it does - and it works well. It was awesome to have turns announced with street names.

I also tried the Garmin Varia radar. I was on the fence whether it’s worth the investment...and I absolutely LOVE it 😍. Being aware of approaching car way before you can hear them is amazing. I felt much comfortable on the road.

I am ready to explore a new route tomorrow!!!

    28 Aug 2020

    Wait. What? ....Again?

The challenge was supposed to take place in June and it was moved to September because of Covid-19. I missed that info, as I was posting all my updates via my Facebook fundraiser. So, in May I decided to start my challenge a month early and double my distance goal, as I could spend many nights after work riding in Zwift's virtual world Watopia. Not much else to do in quarantine.
