I'm Riding For

Rhonda, and Victoria!

Rhonda, and Victoria!

My mom. Bill's mom. My sister. Carolyn. Savannah. A 3 year old boy with acute leukemia in 1981. My precious neighbor Freda. People ask me if sometimes I just don't feel like riding. Yup, sometimes I'd rather sit on the porch with Bill and the dogs and enjoy a tall cool drink. But people with cancer can't take a day off from it. They can't decide not to have it for a day. Moms can't look at their children and forget what is happening to them. Wives can't ignore the disease attacking their husbands. So it's not hard at all for me to get on my bike and ride. It's easy. And you all do the pedaling! Every dollar you give pushes me up the next hill. Your generosity has ENCOURAGED and impressed me no END. We started out with a goal of 200 miles and $500 last year. HA! You all blew that UP! We want to take care of our children. We don't want another grandfather to have empty arms, another mother to cry herself to sleep. We care. We can do this. My Story

30 May 2018

This June, I am taking part in the Great Cycle Challenge to fight kids' cancer!

Why? Because I hate cancer. Because I have seen first hand that funding for cancer research and treatment improves life. Over 15,700 children are diagnosed every year, and sadly, 38 children die of cancer every week.

Because any cancer research benefits ALL cancer patients and their families and their friends.

So I am doing the best I can to help these kids and support Children's Cancer Research Fund to allow them to continue their work to develop lifesaving treatments and find a cure for childhood cancer.

And here YOU have an opportunity to do something that makes you feel GOOD! Make a donation! You will whistle through your day knowing you did a Good Thing! I'll ride the miles and do the begging, gladly. And I'll appreciate every dollar you can give - YOU ARE THE BEST!!!

Your support will change lives.

Thank you.

We had the rare privilege of hosting the 21 cyclists the Ozarks Team from the Texas 4000 last night. These are UT Austin students who ride from Austin TX to Anchorage ALASKA in 70 days to raise money for cancer programs. Millions of dollars. There are three routes, Ozarks, Rockies, and Sierras. Ozarks is the longest, designed to include the states with the highest rates of cancer, and KY is #1. I couldn't have possibly managed without the HUGE help of our neighborhood and our cycling club members. Honestly, the whole thing was beyond my ability to describe. Such wonderful young people! Such a fabulous community. Stuff of miracles.

Our cycling club president and I got to ride out with them this morning. We went for the first 20 miles of their 104. (Actually I met them past where they started, so I only went 13.4 out and then back.)

I am inspired. To continue my puny efforts. By all of your giving. For the future of our country.

    20 Jun 2018

So last night after Pilates to fix my hip flexors and a delish dinner by Chef Bill, I thought of going out to get a few more miles on the bike. But I was tired to my bones and I thought maybe that was asking for trouble and it would be safer and wiser to fertilize the veggie plants, because it was already approaching 8 PM. Congratulating myself on my common sense, I saw my dear friends and neighbors who had been away on vacation pulling up in their car. I hugged one and was in the process of reaching in the passenger window to hug the other when I stepped off the curb in front of our house, rolled my ankle, and disappeared with a most ungraceful thud onto the pavement.

I have 'rolly' ankles and have sprained each of them about 253 times, so I know this will get better soon, very soon. I walked the dogs this morning (ow) and I did ride the bike to work this morning and back at lunch time. Riding wasn't horrible but getting on and off was rather a challenge. I actually laughed out loud because I thought if anyone saw me trying to get on the bike they would shout at me, "for the love of God, old woman, just drive the car!"

I debated riding tonight, but really I think ice and elevation will serve me better. I expect I'll be back in the saddle tomorrow and racking up the miles! So this is my very "lame" (get it) apology for not posting a 20 mile ride tonight. Tomorrow is a NEW DAY! (Of course you could still donate if you really want to, and you'll be eligible for the drawing for one of Bill's paintings! See my FB page for details!) Thank you for all you've done already! More than $10,000 in three weeks is FANTASMAGORIC!!! And #YOUROCK!!!

    7 Jun 2018

It's June 7th already! I've ridden 128 miles. That's exactly from here to Nashville! woohooooo! Two miles past Bowling Green and 30 miles on the other side of Evansville, IN. Crazy when you think about it. 372 miles to go. Because of the generosity and spirit of 38 of you, we have raised $3,721.33 to find treatments and ways to prevent cancer, specifically childhood cancer. YOU ARE THE BEST!!! Every time a notification pops up on my FB page that someone has sponsored me, I feel like it's all worth it. It's hot in Western Kentucky. My muscles are old. BUT no matter what, it's nothing compared to what a kid feels like going through the grueling process day after day after unending day. Or that child's parents. Nope, no comparison. So my part is easy.

I am grateful to ALL of you - each one! I know we've all been fighting cancer with our donations a LOT this year - and to quote a dear friend, IT'S ALL GOOD!!! We are seeing real progress in better treatments, longer lives, and better quality of lives. And we are learning more and more ways to prevent the damned disease in the first place. THANKS TO YOU!!!

I'll keep riding, please donate what you can, if you can, when you can. THANK YOU!

  • I am off and pedaling to CRUSH cancer and CRUISE to a cure!
    1 Jun 2018

Fifteen point eight miles down, and only [ha] four hundred and eighty-four point two (484.2) to go. I feel a little bit old, and foolish, and frightened right now.

Last year YOU GOOD PEOPLE donated 279 times to raise $20,796.30. Were you the ones who developed the new treatment for acute leukemia? Maybe you were the ones who helped develop that more effective treatment for glioblastoma that has less side effects. HOW EXCITING IS THAT!!!

Out of those 279 donations, 93 were less than or equal to $25, so don't think you don't make a difference. And 186 donations were greater to or equal to $35. EVERY DOLLAR COUNTS and it adds up.

Okay, just TALKING about your generosity has made me feel less old, less tired, less intimidated, and MUCH MORE PUMPED! I can't let the kids down. I can't let my friends with cancer down. I can't forget my dear mother, my sister, my friend Carolyn, my neighbor Freda ever. We can do this. And we start NOW. Thank you all! You ROCK!

  • COUNTDOWN!!!
    29 May 2018

I can start chalking up my mileage on Friday, June 1st. And on Saturday I'm going to going to try to do the Spokes for Strokes charity ride. [It's win-win; I pay to do the ride which benefits the local hospital's stroke program, and you sponsor me, which raises money for the Children's Cancer Research Fund!] It's hilly. I ride to and from the start, which is 2 miles each way, so my total ride should be around 40 miles. Who wants to sponsor me for this ride?

You pick: $ .50/mile? $1.00/mile? $2.00/mile? Hey you can go hog wild and do $10/mile!!! Every dollar you gives makes my old legs feel stronger! And lordy with those hills I'm going to need all the help I can get, please and THANK YOU!
