I'm Riding For

Rhonda

Rhonda

My mom. Bill's mom. My sister. Carolyn. Savannah. A 3 year old boy with acute leukemia in 1981. And now my precious neighbor Freda. People ask me if sometimes I just don't feel like riding. Yup, sometimes I'd rather sit on the porch with Bill and the dogs and enjoy a tall cool drink. But people with cancer can't take a day off from it. They can't decide not to have it for a day. Moms can't look at their children and forget what is happening to them. Wives can't ignore the disease attacking their husbands. So it's not hard at all for me to get on my bike and ride. It's easy. And you all do the pedaling! Every dollar you give pushes me up the next hill. Your generosity has ENCOURAGED and impressed me no END. We started out with a goal of 200 miles and $500. HA! You all blew that UP! We care, government. Do you hear us? We want to take care of our children. We don't want another grandfather to have empty arms, another mother to cry herself to sleep. We care. We can do this.

  • What a WILD ride we have been on!
    1 Jul 2017

Well, friends, we sure did it!

My first mileage goal was 200 miles, and my first donations goal was $500. Now, look at what YOU all did.

YOU helped me pedal to 500 MILES.

YOU kept giving and giving and sharing and giving and giving some more. I raised my donations goal to $1500 (let that sink in), and then $3500.

POOF you all blew that up, so up we went to $5000 an dthen $7500. $10,000 came and went BOOM, so now we were aiming for $15,000, WHAT?

My boss Ryan said, "Don't mess with $17,500, just go for $20,000. NO WAY. I quaked. I balked. I hemmed and hawed. I was running fresh out of friends. People had already been so very generous, I didn't want to be greedy.

    But. LOOK WHAT YOU DID!!!!

I don't know when I've been so excited or quite so exhausted for as extended a period of time. Wasn't it a BLAST?

    - In the live video on FB, when you all were with me for the 500th mile, you know the part where I was going 21.7 mph on the flat part up on the Greenway Trail? I CAN'T DO THAT!!!

    - Those clouds at the end that look just like angel's wings?

    - That Rhonda is still here to ride with us (even if she can subtract so well ;-) in real life) TWO YEARS after her horrid diagnosis?

    - That I was even able to ride 500 miles in 30 days!

    - That YOU all donated $20,796.30 (with the help of the Macy's matching funds) in 30 days!

    - That 38,053 RIDERS in this country rode 2,626,184 miles to raise $4,369,112 for the Children's Cancer Research Fund, because a young girl in the '80's on her death bed asked her parents to donate the money she'd been saving for a 10-speed bike to children's cancer research.

Those are all miracles. I believe we are surrounded by little and big miracles all the time. And we can make miracles, especially when we work together.

I'm going to ask you for another miracle. Here is a very easy way to contact the people who are paid to represent you. Just click this link https://www.usa.gov/elected-officials (or copy and paste it if it's not underlined). This isn't political; It's American. Just tell them how you feel about supporting cancer research and treatment. That's all. WE can do this. WE can do this together.

I am so proud of you, so grateful to you,. You made a little miracle happen. We ROCK!

    smiles and hugs-

    Patience

Donors, you have blown my socks off! Literally, I have no more socks that aren't blown to shreds. You MUST be so proud of yourselves; you certainly should be. You remember my first goal was $500? We are now only $40 shy of EIGHTEEN THOUSAND!!! My first mileage goal was 200 miles, and today I passed 400 miles, ONLY because you all were pushing the pedals and pushing me on.

The local news did a sweet story on the Great Cycle Challenge": http://www.wpsdlocal6.com/story/35738771/i-am-local-6-paducah-woman-1-in-nation-for-fundraising-cancer-research?utm_medium=social&utm_source=facebook_WPSD-TV

That was all because of YOU.

If you are not a facebook friend, I am a thanking kind of person. I've been doing random drawings among all the donors to give little thank you gifts. Other GREAT people have donated some FANTASTIC gifts! If your name is drawn, you will get an email from me. Don't hesitate to send me a friend request on FB if you'd like.

WE are helping. WE are making a difference. I am so very proud of you!

I am grateful to my (tired) bones! ON TO FRIDAY!!!

  • New personal BEST!!
    21 Jun 2017

It's pretty cool what powerful incentive can do. I made a quiet little goal for myself; didn't tell you all because I wasn't sure I could do it and didn't want to let you down.

But I didn't let you down! I rode 103.3 miles in five days to help raise money for cancer research. Woohoooooooo!!!!

Now, don't get all impressed, because real cyclists can ride a hundred miles in a day, and do that regularly every weekend all over the country. The rides are called Centuries. I'd like to do one of those before I die, but I don't know if I ever will.

For now, I'm enjoying every single mile. And I can't thank you all enough for the incentive.

Grounded. So I'll work on thank you messages to sponsors, getting thank you gifts in the mail on their way to the donors, brainstorming ways to get local peoples to sponsor, getting my needle felted critters finished for the thank you gifts, and then I better trim the dogs' nails! YOU ALL ROCK and here comes the storm as promised, BOOM!

  • New Goal (gulp) $20,000
    16 Jun 2017

    Okay, Ryan. I did it.

I don't want to seem ungrateful or overconfident. I am still incredulous over what you all have accomplished!

My boss Ryan thought I was chicken for not upping my goal to $20,000. So far he has been right about EVERYTHING. And Sue Hopper was right about upping my goal several times. And I AM NOT A CHICKEN (except for bridges, and things that pop or go bang). So, taking a deep breath and committing to working toward this goal with all I have, here we go!!!

    16 Jun 2017

You know how I am always butting into conversations, and I get a million bugs in my mouth when I ride the bike every single time because my mouth is always open, either yapping or in a big, silly grin? Well, folks, I am speechless. My face is leaking all over the place. And all I can say is thank you. YOU ROCK. AMEN.

  • What a crazy two weeks! What a day! Because of EACH ONE OF YOU!
    15 Jun 2017

Look what you've done! You have raised $10,925 and that is BEFORE the matching funds kick in! The challenge organizers say that it will take up to three days for the matching funds to show up.

How can I tell you how much I appreciate your generosity and your giving spirits? I am just stunned. Sue Hopper told me to increase our goal $10,000. I didn't want to. I didn't want to have a goal we couldn't achieve. Finally, today (or yesterday?) I thought I'd try. And no sooner than I raised the goal to $10,000, you all CRUSHED it!

I hope you know how much gratitude and pride I feel toward each of you. You are doing a really good thing.

    love,

    Patience

  • Why?
    9 Jun 2017

When I was in nursing school, one of my first patients was a three year old boy with acute leukemia. His parents would not consent to a blood transfusion because of their religious beliefs. While we waited for a court order, that little boy suffered miserably. He looked at us for help and we could do nothing.

Now, there are unprecedented threats to funding cancer research and treatment. As an RN I find this unconscionable: that our rich, blessed nation would turn our backs on people with cancer. That clinical trials would stop, that scientists on the brink of discovery would be stymied.

So when this opportunity arose i was THRILLED! And look what YOU have done! Your generosity has surpassed my wildest expectations. We can do this! WE can make a difference!

We have to take care of the kids. SOMEONE HAS TO TAKE CARE OF OUR KIDS!

Your donations bring hope, bring love, bring life, and bring us back to a national sense of pride. Thank you.

    3 Jun 2017

Wow! Thank you so much everyone. I just upped my fundraising goal x 3, because we almost reached $500 on the first day! I will do at least random drawing among my donor/supporters for one of my felties to show my appreciation. I ask for your good thoughts as I do my longest ride this morning - close to 40 miles! The ride itself is a Stroke awareness fundraiser so it's a WIN-WIN! (IF I can make it up the hills. There are some doozies!) Thank you all!

This June, I am taking part in the Great Cycle Challenge to fight kids' cancer!

Why? Because right now, cancer is the biggest killer of children from disease in the United States. Over 15,700 children are diagnosed every year, and sadly, 38 children die of cancer every week.

Kids should be living life, not fighting for it.

So I am raising funds through my challenge to help these kids and support Children’s Cancer Research Fund to allow them to continue their work to develop lifesaving treatments and find a cure for childhood cancer.

Please support me by making a donation to give these kids the brighter futures they deserve.

Your support will change little lives.

    Thank you.

    Patience
