My Story

29 Jul 2020

This September, I am taking part in the Great Cycle Challenge to fight kids' cancer!

Why? Because right now, cancer is the biggest killer of children from disease in the United States. Over 15,700 children are diagnosed every year, and sadly, 38 children die of cancer every week.

Kids should be living life, not fighting for it.

So I am raising funds through my challenge to help these kids and support Children's Cancer Research Fund to allow them to continue their work to develop lifesaving treatments and find a cure for childhood cancer.

Please support me by making a donation to give these kids the brighter futures they deserve.

Your support will change little lives.

Thank you.

  • Almost over.
    29 Sep 2020

The month of September draws to a close and with it the Great Cycling Challenge ends. It has been an honor to cycle the miles in honor a Lizzie Stratton. I have been blessed with sponsors that share my belief that there IS a cure for childhood cancers and that it is worth supporting those that search every day to find it. While the cycling and the fund raising ends tomorrow the fight is not over for the kids that will wake up on October 1st facing another day of chemo or surgeries to endure. There is still time to made a donation to the Children's Cancer Research Fund. I'll ride tomorrow in honor of the fight the kids are putting up and in honor of those who fund the search for the cure that will allow them to end their fight. Lizzie lost her fight. Let's not let that happen to any more kids.

    Almost over.

  • The Last Week of the Challenge
    24 Sep 2020

Today starts the last week of the Great Cycling Challenge. Many of the riders have reached and exceeding the miles goal they set for themselves. All together the riders have pedaled 3,617,045 miles. An amazing number for sure. Even more amazing is the support of the sponsors. Altogether they have donated $13,092,129 to the Children's Cancer Research Fund.

    Can you believe that?

Yet the riders continue to ride. Because the kids that are undergoing cancer treatments are still fighting for their lives. I passed my mile goal last week. But I am still riding. I am challenging myself to keep going for the kids. We are in the last days. Please consider a donation, of any amount you can, to the Children's Cancer Research Fund. Thanks so much!

  • Starting Week 3
    14 Sep 2020

Today starts week 3 of the Great Cycle Challenge. 13 days are in the books. Cyclists from across the USA have logged over 2,389,000 miles so far and their sponsors have donated over $12,351,000 to the Children's Cancer Research Fund! Somewhere in that pile of money there has to be that Golden Dollar that tips the scale and finds the cure for children's cancer. But we all know that cancer research is not cheap or easy. That is why the Cycling Challenge continues on for the rest of September. The riders will keep riding. Hopefully the sponsors will keep up the pace with the donations. Sadly some kids will keep dying. Please hang in there with us. If you have been thinking about donating, there is still time. Any amount will help. With so many people supporting the Fund it adds up really quickly.

If you have already donated, THANKS SO MUCH! Maybe now you can add a prayer for the kids, their doctors, the researchers, and for the safety of the cyclists as they continue to ride. - Ron

  • Thanks so Much!
    10 Sep 2020

Just a quick word of thanks to all who have donated to the Children's Cancer Research Fund and sponsored me in the Great Cycle Challenge. The Challenge continues through the rest of September and donations have continued to flow in from all across the USA. The results are a bright spot in all of other news from fires, Covid, social unrest, and the political mess that our Country is going through. Wouldn't it be great to put an end to the suffering that cancer causes for children and their families? I ride in memory of Lizzie Stratton. She was our next door neighbor in Kearney. She lost her battle with cancer at the age of 14. During the years that she underwent treatments she suffered a lot. But she did so with such grace and such a pure heart that her life touched and inspired many others. She taught us that "Living Life Lizzie Style" means giving of yourself in spite of your suffering. It is an honor to have known her.

    Thanks so Much!

  • Wind on their backs
    7 Sep 2020

This morning I woke up and heard the wind blowing through the trees. My first thought was "good morning to not ride". I laid there and started thinking about the kids waking up to another day of cancer treatment. They don't get a choice to not get up and not start a tough day. So, for them, I got up and headed out. The first half of my ride was into the wind and every peddle stroke was an effort. Then I made the turn and the wind was on my back. The miles flew by and it was the joy that every cyclist knows.

The kids don't get a day with the "wind on their back". Your donation may help the researchers make the turn that will put the wind on the back of kids fighting pediatric cancer.

Wednesday of this week is "Kick Cancer's Butt Day". A donor stepped up and will match the first $1.2 Million donated that day dollar for dollar. If you are thinking of donating, hold that thought until Wednesday and your donation will be doubled! Let's don't let a single dollar of this match opportunity be lost!

  • Labor Day weekend on the Johnson Lake Trail
    5 Sep 2020

What a beautiful morning for a ride around the Johnson Lake Trail. The trail was crowded with walkers, runners, and cyclists. Was a great chance to wear my new Challenge shirt!

The miles are rolling by easily. Kids fighting for their lives don't have days where the road seems to run downhill. Your contribution to the Children's Cancer Research Fund might be the dollars that lets some scientist find the cure we are all hoping and praying for.

Thanks for your support! - Ron

  • Day 1 of the Great Cycling Challenge
    1 Sep 2020

What a great day for cycling in Central Nebraska. Temps in the 60's and just a little wind this morning. Thank's to my brother Rich for joining me on my first official ride of the 2020 Great Cycling Challenge! We rode a 33.3 mile loop through the Platte River Valley that included a good climb up the hill south of Cozad on Highway 23. Looking forward to more rides as the month progresses. Appreciate so many that have supported the Children's Cancer Research Fund and my challenge ride!

  • September Preparation Continues
    23 Aug 2020

I have been doing some extra riding to get prepared for the September Challenge event. On every ride I think about how little my workout compares with the emotional and physical stress the children that are battling cancer go through. The impact on the kids, and their families, is impossible to imagine. Together we can help those working to find the cure for cancer. You can donate directly from this page. Thanks!
