James "Rocky" Voges

James "Rocky" Voges

On my first day of school, first grade, I met a quiet, shy boy, who introduced himself as "Rocky". Named for his favorite cartoon character, Rocket J. Squirrel, of Rocky and Bullwinkle fame. We instantly became fast friends. Life was great and carefree, with Rocky enjoying Boy Scouts, playing with his friends and siblings and excelling at archery. When suddenly in the fourth grade, Rocky became very sick. Overnight, Rocky stopped coming to school as he was diagnosed with brain cancer. A death sentence in 1966. And then he was gone! I was devastated. This was my first meeting with cancer. I have never forgotten his warm smile and zest for life. So this year I am going back to my roots and will be remembering this strong, funny and loving little man. Gone way to soon from our lives. This year is for you my forever little friend. You made a huge impact on my life. I will NEVER forget you!

My Story

This September, I am taking part in the Great Cycle Challenge to fight kids' cancer!

Why? Because right now, cancer is the biggest killer of children from disease in the United States. Over 15,700 children are diagnosed every year, and sadly, 38 children die of cancer every week.

Kids should be living life, not fighting for it.

So I am raising funds through my challenge to help these kids and support Children's Cancer Research Fund to allow them to continue their work to develop lifesaving treatments and find a cure for childhood cancer.

Please support me by making a donation to give these kids the brighter futures they deserve.

Your support will change little lives.

Thank you.

  • More on Rocky
    30 Mar 2020

I just want to share a little background on Rock. He was the oldest of 2 boys out of 7 children. He and his brother loved playing together. He also was active in the Cub Scouts as well as Little Chief's Baseball. But his real passion shined in archery. He won several trophies at archery meets and was a member of Prairie Bowmen Archery Club. He always seemed to have his big, warm smile on no mater what.

  • Finding Rocky!
    19 Mar 2020

I had always kept the obit from Rocky's death in my Bible. And as I wrote about him, I thought, how nice it would be to have a real photograph of him for my loyal friends and donors to see what a cute and happy kid he was. Well I did a little research and discovered both his parents still alive. I mailed them a letter and some info on the Challenge. Just a few days later I received not only a picture, but 3 pics and both his mom and dad wrote me separate letters thanking me for Rocky's memorial! WOW!
