Pierce Gaines

In August 2019, Pierce heard the words no family ever expects: leukemia. Since then, he has faced every season with courage—completing ninth grade away from campus, navigating a tenth grade overshadowed by COVID, turning sixteen, and now graduated high school and stepping into a new chapter of his young life healthy! Patty and I have watched him meet each day with a remarkable spirit—never complaining, never asking “why me,” and somehow keeping his sense of humor through it all. By the grace of God, Patty’s steadfast love, and the extraordinary doctors and nurses at Nemours and Baptist, cancer is now just a memory. Pierce’s strength and faith have humbled and inspired us. Our scars are our testimony. Now it’s our turn to give back—to honor those who carried us and to stand with the next generation of kids determined to kick cancer’s butt. This September, I am taking part in the Great Cycle Challenge to fight kids' cancer!

Why? Because right now, cancer is the biggest killer of children from disease in the United States. Over 15,700 children are diagnosed every year, and sadly, 38 children die of cancer every week.

Our son Pierce was diagnosed with Leukemia and has successfully battled this disease throughout his high school years! Patty and I saw him fight this disease with the best attitude. Never complaining or asking why. It is but for the grace of God and the great doctors and nurses at the Nemours and Baptist that he has made it through his treatment and is now cancer free!!

So, I am raising funds through my challenge to help other kids like Pierce and support Children's Cancer Research Fund to allow them to continue their work to develop lifesaving treatments and find a cure for childhood cancer.
