My Story

19 Jul 2026

Last year I only rode 100 miles. That was the right goal for where I was, and I'm proud I didn't skip. This year I am ready for a comeback: 250 miles in September and $2,500.

I'd love to tell you I've been training all year. But... I have not been on the bike at all yet. I started last month by scrambling up and down mountains on foot with friends for a week. Call it altitude training. My bike has been collecting dust for 10 months, and we'll both get cleaned up this week. Then we have six weeks to get ready for September. Plenty of time. Probably.

How far is 250 miles? It's how high the International Space Station orbits. Point my bike straight up, pedal for a month, and I'd be knocking on the hatch. It's also roughly Boston to New York City, or about 9 1/2 Boston Marathons back to back.

Why am I doing this? Cancer is a leading killer, and I've watched too many family members and friends have to fight it. Too many lost that fight. I want to fight back.

Please support me if you can! A dollar a mile is $250. Fifty cents is $125. A quarter a mile is $62.50. Even a nickel a mile ($12.50) means a lot!

Every dollar raised goes to the Children's Cancer Research Fund, which develops innovative treatments and works toward a cure for childhood cancer.

Donate here (the big orange button on the top of the page) or through my Facebook fundraiser.

You can also Venmo or PayPal me and I'll add your donation to the challenge for you.

Every donation is also a reason to get on the bike. It's a person I can't let down. On mile 40 of a hot Saturday, that's exactly the motivation I need. I'll be thinking of you.

And support doesn't have to be money! Come ride a few miles with me. Cheer me on. Share this page with someone who might chip in. Ask me how it's going and make me admit the number out loud. All of it helps.

I'll post updates in my GCC Blog. You'll be seeing a lot of my sweaty face 😁

Thank you for your support πŸ™‚

Back to the Charles River today. Flat, paved bike path. In case you're wondering why the map looks identical for 22 miles and 16 miles: a couple of sections are worth riding back and forth πŸ”. It lets me stay flexible about when to head home.

This time I asked someone to take my picture at the START of the ride, so you get to see a version of me that is not yet destroyed.

Destroyed came later. I got home and flopped onto the nice cool floor under the fan next to Squeaks while the other human went to fetch me an Apfelschorle. Squeaks did not move over. She does not share her premium spots. 🐈

The crazy highlight of this ride: I called out "On your left" to warn someone who was about to step right onto the bike path without looking, and an insect flew directly into my now open mouth. Then came the burn of the sting. On the tip of my tongue.

After being angry at the universe for a mile, WTF, I settled on: not allergic, tongue and not throat, did not die. 🐝

    22 miles ridden. 198 to go! πŸš΄β€β™€οΈ

Come ride some of it with me. But no talking. Better to keep your mouth shut. 🀐

  • Rain. No Rain. Thunderstorm. Sunny.
    3 Sep 2026

Yesterday forecast for today: rain, all day, again. 🌧️

This morning the forecast said 4 pm would be clear. Excellent. I had a plan.

At 3:30 I check again. Still clear! I get dressed, slather on the sunscreen, check one more time and the forecast now says THUNDERSTORMS. β›ˆ

Squeaks and I were not amused. I figured a grumpy picture with the cat was going to be today's whole update. 😾

Then the forecast moved the storm to 5 pm. Fine. One hour. Go.

So instead of the grumpy picture you get a sunny one from the river an hour later. It did not rain. β˜€οΈ

14 miles ridden. 220 miles to go! πŸš΄β€β™€οΈ

  • I kicked of the September Challenge!
    2 Sep 2026

The first ride is on the books and I am excited to finally kick the challenge off! Yesterday was a washout, but today was 72 degrees with a breeze and clouds. Perfect for me!

And I even spotted the first bright red leaves on the river path. Fall is coming, no more summer heat.

16 miles ridden. 234 to go.

Come ride some of it with me!

  • The FIRST ride in 2026!
    23 Jul 2026

It was supposed to be an easy one. So I headed out on the flat Minute Man Bikeway.

I got irritated about a detour and then I got excited about the fresh asphalt for several miles 😁

It ended up being over an hour and the tiny UPs on the way back did hurt more than they should have. 😫

    18 miles / 29 km.

I am planning to do this 14x in September….😬
