I'm Riding For

Libby Kern

Libby Kern

Libby is the 12-year granddaughter of a high school classmate. She has been dealing with a brain tumor since she was 2 years old. Her parents had been told the cancer was inoperable. Pediatric cancer treatment advancements, often made possible by donations to events like the Great Cycle Challenge, have opened new doors. On July 2, Libby had surgery to remove the tumor. There is still a rigorous treatment plan ahead of her. And, brain tumors are notorious for returning. But, there is great hope for Libby. I am honored to ride for her.

My Story

7 Jul 2021

I am riding in Great Cycle Challenge to fight kids' cancer! This will be my seventh year participating in the event. I want to thank everyone who has supported me in the past and hope you will continue that support.

There is no doubt the past year has been a struggle for most of us. Our lives and routines have been disrupted by the coronavirus. Simply put, life has not been normal. Now, imagine adding the stress and heartbreak of learning your child has been diagnosed with cancer. It would be devastating.

So I am once again raising funds for the Children's Cancer Research Fund to help find a cure . The money you donate will allow them to continue their work in funding lifesaving research. Every dollar will bring us one step closer to helping another child beat this disease. And this year.

Your support does, and will, change little lives for the better - as I hope it does for Libby!

Thank you.

My Challenge

  • Support from across the country
    13 Oct 2021

In a previous post, I mentioned asking for pictures of Captain America Pez dispensers from other collectors to show Libby their support with her cancer challenge. They having been pouring in. Here are a few. I am adding the home city and state of the Pez collector who sent the picture.

  • Captain America Pez for Libby
    9 Oct 2021

I had reached out to the Pez collector community telling them about Libby and her Captain America doll. I asked that they send me pictures of their Captain America dispensers as a sign of support for Libby, as she battles her cancer. My plan is to put together a collage of the pictures and send it to Libby to show her there are people across the country pulling for her. One of the collectors, offered to make this special Pez stand for her. What a great gesture! It looks great. I will be sending it to her today.

  • I know that smell...
    9 Oct 2021

I ride on a paved trail used by walkers, roller bladers, cyclists, joggers, skate boarders of all shapes, sizes and ages. Sometimes as I pass a trail user, I will get a whiff of a scent. Sometimes, it is a pleasant smell, like perfume or cologne. Or it can be unpleasant like a ripe sweaty body or someone who eats too much curry (I just don't like that smell). Then, there are those smells that have me guessing - "I think that smells like a dryer sheet. Is that a dirty diaper? A smell I experienced today was totally unexpected. It was the smell of chemotherapy. The smell I remember emanating from a good friend who was being treated for an aggressive form of breast cancer. This time the odor was coming from a child being pulled in a wagon. It took me a moment to recognize it. I had to slow to pass them, as the trail at that point was crowded. As I did, I thought "I hope that little boy has a better outcome than Karen."

  • Shut Up Legs...
    5 Oct 2021

...You're Fine. Well, in my case, not exactly. I have an unexplained drop in iron and a red blood cell issue that is trying to be diagnosed. This has caused a general fatigue throughout the Great Cycle Challenge. And, my legs are not recovering as they used to. On top of that, exercise exacerbates the low iron condition. Since I hit my 700 mile goal in September, I will be be backing off, not stopping, my riding for the rest of the month. Miles and donations count through the end of October.
