I'm Riding For

Nathalia (Nat) and all the GCC Kids

Nathalia (Nat) and all the GCC Kids

I have ridden for many kids over the past five years. This year, Nat, the lead Great Cycle Challenge spokeskid, was an inspiration to all. The story of her courage and how she was raising awareness for kid's cancer was a feature in a June issue of People Magazine. Unfortunately, like many of the GCC kids in this picture, she has now lost her fight with cancer. She passed just before the Great Cycle Challenge riders began their pedaling in the 2019 event. We need to find a cure.

My Story

2 Jul 2019

I am taking part in the 2019 Great Cycle Challenge to fight kids' cancer! This is my fifth year participating in the event.

Why do I ride more than 500 miles in a month? Because cancer has touch too many of us - and we are all someone's child. I was recently reminded of this when visiting my 91 year old mother. She called me "her baby" and I am 68!

My first grandchild is just a year and a half old. I can't imagine her having to fight such an insidious disease. Yet, there are parents and grandparents having to do just that. Kids should be living life, not fighting for it.

So I am once again raising funds through my challenge to help these kids and to support Children's Cancer Research Fund. The money you donate will allow them to continue their work in funding lifesaving research to help find a cure for childhood cancer.

Your support does, and will, change little lives.

Thank you.

    23 Jul 2019

I got caught in a thunder storm on yesterday's ride. Lots of rain and wind. It certainly makes the riding more uncomfortable (and hazardous), but it is nothing compared to what kids have to endure as they fight for their lives to beat cancer.

    19 Jul 2019

Today I was interviewed by the local cable channel about my participation in the Great Cycle Challenge. Chloe Walbruch, from the Children's Cancer Research Fund, the organization behind GCC, joined us via video conference. I invited several other GCC riders to join me on a ride this evening, which will filmed as well. This was a great opportunity to spread awareness about the event and the cause! I will post a link to the broadcast once it is available.

    16 Jul 2019

In today's highly polarized political environment, it is so refreshing to see individuals from across the country unite and support my riding to help raise funds to fight kid's cancer. As of today, 7/16, I have supporters from 18 different states...and I might add from Canada, England, France and Singapore too. Truly amazing!

  • The "true" heroes are YOU
    11 Jul 2019

When a rider in the Great Cycle Challenge raises $2,500, they are sent a "hero" jersey. I have received one of the jerseys each of the year they have been available. However, I am NOT the hero. I am far from one. All I do is ride a bike. The true heroes are those that have supported my riding with generous donations. And, the kids fighting cancer, for whom we are riding to find a cure.

  • My Picture
    1 Jul 2019

I have had several questions about the profile picture I use for the Great Cycle Challenge. Most frequently, I am asked why I am facing with my back to the camera. The answer is simple. I wanted to honor a young girl, Callie, a GCC spokeskid, who lost her battle with cancer. As you can see, I am wearing the same "hero" jersey and trying to pose as she did. Cancer took her strength and then her life. We need to find a cure.

    24 Jun 2019

With just one week to go, it is time to make the push to bust past mileage and fundraising goals. Although I have met my 500 mile goal, I will be pedaling every day to see how many miles I can accumulate. If you are considering donating to support this cause, I hope my effort will entice you make that gift. It would be so great to blow past the $7,500 mark, and with your support, WE can do it!

  • My "spirit" ride schedule
    19 Jun 2019

The weather has messed with my original schedule and a number of memorial rides have been added. (Don't hesitate to ask if you have lost a loved one to cancer. Due to the weather, the rides will extend into July.) Here is the schedule as of June 19th. I just completed a 26 mile ride for Stanley Broski, Jr. Before starting off, I made a dedication to Stanley and also asked him to keep the rain away. He did, replacing it with 100% humidity. He must have been a joker! My kind of guy. I wish I had known him.

    30 May 2019

I dedicate each of my rides to someone who has lost their battle with cancer. I cycle with their picture in my rear jersey pocket. In this way our spirits ride together. This simple action makes each mile I pedal personally more meaningful. If you have lost someone to cancer, please contact me. I would be honored to do a ride in the memory.

    28 May 2019

There are numerous charity bike rides to raise funds for cancer research, many organized by the American Cancer Society. I will be riding their Bridge to Beach ride on June 9th. A good friend, Eric Prostko, is riding in the grueling Pennsylvania Perimeter Ride Against Cancer. Though different rides, each is for the same cause - to find a cure for cancer. If one of the other events resonates with you, please consider riding yourself or making a donation in support of a participant. Here are the links:

    22 May 2019

A week or so from today 70,000+ cyclist from across the country will be riding to reach their mileage goals. We are doing this to find a cure for pediatric cancer. Today is set aside to pay tribute to those kids that are in a battle to beat cancer. They should not have to do this. They should be enjoying life. Thank you so much for your support of my riding to help find a cure.

It is not often that I spot someone in a Great Cycle Challenge jersey. But, today I did. Cookie Adam, rode in last year’s event. Of course, I encouraged her to register again for this year’s challenge and to join my team.
