I'm Riding For

Libby Kern

Libby Kern

Libby is the 12-year granddaughter of a high school classmate. She has been dealing with a brain tumor since she was 2 years old. Her parents had been told the cancer was inoperable. Pediatric cancer treatment advancements, often made possible by donations to events like the Great Cycle Challenge, have opened new doors. On July 2, Libby had surgery to remove the tumor. There is still a rigorous treatment plan ahead of her. And, brain tumors are notorious for returning. But, there is great hope for Libby. I am honored to ride for her.

My Story

7 Jul 2021

I am riding in Great Cycle Challenge to fight kids' cancer! This will be my seventh year participating in the event. I want to thank everyone who has supported me in the past and hope you will continue that support.

There is no doubt the past year has been a struggle for most of us. Our lives and routines have been disrupted by the coronavirus. Simply put, life has not been normal. Now, imagine adding the stress and heartbreak of learning your child has been diagnosed with cancer. It would be devastating.

So I am once again raising funds for the Children's Cancer Research Fund to help find a cure . The money you donate will allow them to continue their work in funding lifesaving research. Every dollar will bring us one step closer to helping another child beat this disease. And this year.

Your support does, and will, change little lives for the better - as I hope it does for Libby!

Thank you.

  • It is a wrap!
    3 Nov 2021

This is my final post of this year's Great Cycle Challenge. What a ride it has been! I mocked up a check to show just how INCREDIBLE the generosity of my supporters has been. What an AWESOME total we raised together. I thank each and everyone of you for your donation, and in some cases, your multiple donations! While this event has no concluded, the battle kids face in fighting cancer has no respite. But, rest assured, your donation will help fund the research needed to discover better treatments for pediatric cancer!

  • FOX News did the story!
    29 Oct 2021

FOX News reached out again. This time they gave me a bit more notice and we were able to connect. The interview was aired after the World Series game on Wednesday night and again on the FOX morning show Thursday morning. If you copy this link, you will be able to see it.

  • Had to pass up a TV opportunity
    25 Oct 2021

I did not recognize the number ringing on my cell phone. So, I let the call go to voice mail. A hour or so later, when I checked my voice mail, I saw the call was from a reporter at Fox News in Philadelphia. She had heard about my Great Cycle Challenge riding and wanted to do a "short human interest piece. " I was at work at the time and was scheduled to give a talk about the GCC at a Rotary Club meeting that evening. When I called the reporter back, she said wanted to shoot some video of me riding and do an interview. Unfortunately, by the time we connected, she said she had to meet in the next 45 minutes in order to get on the story on the air. Needless to say, the exposure would have been great to build awareness for the event, but not having my bike at work there was no time to make that happen. I had to pass. Bummer.

  • Some great PR for the GCC
    22 Oct 2021

The local newspaper did an article on my fundraising for the Great Cycle Challenge. The story appeared in the online version of the publication as well as in weekly printed paper. The print version was distributed this past week. It was great to get the PR exposure for the cause.

  • Raising awareness for the Great Cycle Challenge
    22 Oct 2021

Last night I spoke at the Westtown-Goshen Rotary Club about my participation in the Great Cycle Challenge and its purpose. It was a great opportunity to raise the awareness on why fundraising for pediatric cancer is so important. I received a couple additional donations, but BEST of all, a number of members said they would join me and ride in next year's event.

  • Support from across the country
    13 Oct 2021

In a previous post, I mentioned asking for pictures of Captain America Pez dispensers from other collectors to show Libby their support with her cancer challenge. They having been pouring in. Here are a few. I am adding the home city and state of the Pez collector who sent the picture.

  • Captain America Pez for Libby
    9 Oct 2021

I had reached out to the Pez collector community telling them about Libby and her Captain America doll. I asked that they send me pictures of their Captain America dispensers as a sign of support for Libby, as she battles her cancer. My plan is to put together a collage of the pictures and send it to Libby to show her there are people across the country pulling for her. One of the collectors, offered to make this special Pez stand for her. What a great gesture! It looks great. I will be sending it to her today.
