My Story

24 Aug 2020

This September, I am taking part again - my fourth year - in the Great Cycle Challenge to fight kids' cancer!

Kids should be living life, not fighting for it.

In 2017 and 2018, I joined a team called Team Callie, for a young girl battling cancer. Sadly, Callie, 10 years old, passed away on April 7, 2018, after her 18 month battle with cancer.

In March 2019 when I registered, I joined Team Nat. Nat, 15 years old, was diagnosed with osteosarcoma. Sadly, Nat passed away on April 20th, 2019. In memory of Nat, I joined her team again this year.

In 2020, I am riding for a long time friend. Two years ago, Pat and his family found out that cancer had entered their daily lives. Although Pat is not a kid, he is much younger than me. He will be along in September with me - in my thoughts and with my music playing loudly.

Your support will change lives.

Thank you.

I thought I would take a few minutes of your time for a quick reminder from the GCC website on why we ride:

    ****************************************

    OUR STORY

In 1979, 13-year old Katie Hageboeck, from Wayzata, MN, was nearing the end of her 16-month battle with leukemia. Before she died, Katie asked that the money she’d been saving for a 10-speed bicycle be donated to a little-known fund for the University of Minnesota called Children’s Cancer Research Fund.

Katie's dream was to find a cure so that other kids facing cancer would survive.

A little over a year after Katie’s passing, her parents, Diana and Norm, and friends of the family organized what they thought was a one-time benefit fundraiser to honor Katie’s wish.

Forty years later, this “Dawn of a Dream” benefit is still taking place, and Children's Cancer Research Fund has grown from a small grassroots fundraiser into a national nonprofit committed to finding a cure for childhood cancer.

Katie never got the chance to ride her new bike, so we now ride to realize her dream of a world without childhood cancer.

    ***************************************

Amazing what this group has been able to do ... Over 13.5 million dollars raised in 2020 and not done yet.

    Previous years:

    2019 - $8,490,984

    2018 - $6,837,314

    2017 - $4,527,203

    2016 - $3,063,841

    2015 - $1,653,674

Thanks for the part you are playing on the dream of a world without childhood cancer.

  • Getting it done!
    21 Sep 2020

This weekend, I was on a push to finish my miles for the challenge.

I did three rides - Sue joined me for 2.

First one on Saturday was my shortest ride but it was the best as 2 little ones were in the trailer.

Second one was in the evening Saturday - just me, music and a setting sun.

Third one on Sunday was the longest of this challenge.

    Total miles of 50.

And with those three rides in about 24 hours, I was able to achieve my miles goal, to add to the goal achievement on the donations side. As I ride more, I will donate to our daughter Kelly who is trying to achieve her miles goal.

Proud to be part of this group who keep raising awareness for this cause.

And thank you for joining me!

For the overall Challenge - the 3 Rs:

    1. Riders - 134, 000

    2. Raised - $12.8m

    3. Ridden - 3 million miles

    And for me/us:

    * with 150 miles ridden, 75% to the goal - should get those 50 miles in soon.

Another milestone, becoming an All Star, which has been earned by 175 riders

    * The Great Cycle Challenge All Stars recognizes those awesome participants who have raised over $10,000 to fight kids' cancer since the event's inception in 2015.

    Thanks to all of you!

    11 Sep 2020

    1. I just got a note that another donation came in. This puts the donation total to over $5000, which was my most current goal ( I started at $500).

    2. The cool part is the donation came from Viv and Alex, with "alittle help from their friends".

    3. The nice part is that it honors Pat.

And besides knowing that cancer sucks, Pat would always share that something else sucked. Picture with him, and Sue and Kasey, at a game in 2016.

  • It's Friday, so update time......
    11 Sep 2020

What a different week it is been.

    9/11 - Never forget.

Wednesday was Kick Cancer's Butt Day. The $2.4 million raised by the participants was matched by $1.2 million for a total that day of $3.6 m. It's all about helping the kids. The total amount raised is now over $12 million.

My bike tires and slippery trails don't always play nicely together, so I rode inside twice this week. I am now over 100 miles and 50% to my goal.

My sponsor count is up to 38, with over $4700 raised - thanks to all of you.

And on Wednesday, we buried our friend.

Yes, my music will be louder.

    RIP Pat.

  • Some sad news to pass along
    6 Sep 2020

As you may have seen in one of my updates, I was riding this year for our friend Pat. Pat battled his cancer for 2 years.

Sadly, he passed away last night.

He will be missed but is in a better place.

He will be riding with me, music playing loudly as he would have it.

  • Another Friday rolls around
    4 Sep 2020

Here we are with Labor Day weekend. Enjoy!

Officially "on the road again" as the miles now count towards the goal. I got three rides in since Tuesday ( needed to play golf Thursday) for a total of 76 miles, a great start to getting to my goal.

The total riders count is now over 133,000 and over $7.5 million has been raised.

I am blessed that I'm up to 32 sponsors and raised over $4000.

With your help, I'm 46th in the nation, 6th in the state and 3rd in the elderly 66-75 age group.

This week, we got some bad news about our friend Pat, who I am riding for/is riding with me. After being admitted to the hospital with trouble breathing, scans show that the cancer has spread and treatments are no longer the path. He is at home, with hospice, resting comfortably, where he wants to be.

    Stay healthy and safe.

  • Friday update - with a few days to go
    27 Aug 2020

The biking part of this challenge begins on Tuesday. There are over 127,000 riders registered this year.

The biking is the easy part.

    The hard part?

    What these kids go through.

And your part in helping with funds.

As of now, over $5 million has been raised.

    Note the picture.

Not all superheroes wear capes, but I am wearing the 2020 Hero Jersey!

They asked the kids to come up with an idea for a special jersey for the top fundraisers, and they came up with this awesome design.

By you helping me to raise over $2,500 to defeat our arch enemy (cancer), I will be wearing this Spiderman jersey during some of my rides. And the back of the jersey says: Riding To Kick Cancer's Butt

    Thank You !

    21 Aug 2020

    10 days until the start....

It has been a busy week. There are now over 122, 000 riders participating in this challenge. In one week, 6 donors added their names to my sponsor list - now for a total of 30. And the donations? Now approaching $4000. Again - AMAZING!

    How do your donations rank?

Overall for the entire challenge - 26th.

    5th in the state.

And in the prestigious 66-75 age group - 1st.

Two days ago was Tribute Day for the Great Cycle Challenge to fight kids' cancer. This was a day to remember those we've lost, honor those who are fighting to survive and celebrate the efforts of those who are riding in September.

For 8 hours on a billboard in Times Square, pictures were displayed of those riding and those we are riding for. We were proud to have our picture shown as part of the tribute ( displayed here ).

My goal again this year is to raise awareness, raise some funds and ride a few miles. If nothing else, say a prayer for those impacted by cancer.

Thank you for being a part of this with me.

  • Another Friday update - 17 days until the offical start
    14 Aug 2020

Last week I shared a picture of one of my biking partners. This week includes another partner - one I do very much enjoy being on the trail with.

In one week, 8 donors added their names to my sponsor list - now a total of 24. And I raised my $ goal, as the donations are approaching $3000. Amazing!

There are now almost 120k riders registered for the challenge. Based upon all of your support, I am ranked 42nd overall for the country, and 7th in the state of Illinois. But in the age group class of 66-75, I am ranked 3rd!

Thank you again for supporting this cause.

    7 Aug 2020

During my morning rides, sometimes I am joined by a biking partner. Some think we look alike but he is much taller, much slimmer and always wears black. See the picture.

Overall, the challenge this year has over 114k participants and so far, close to $3 million has been raised.

And there is another Schultz joining the challenge this year - her third year.

    https://greatcyclechallenge.com/Riders/KellySchultz1

In less than a week, I have 16 donors on my list and needed to raise my $ goal. So grateful for your response.

In my profile picture, I am wearing the jersey for the 2020 challenge, along with the three "models" with my jerseys from the previous years.

    Thank you!
