My father, Jerry Day, was diagnosed with cancer in May 2004 with only a 44 percent chance of survival. In January 2005, after months of treatment and struggle, he passed away in the hospital. Over the months between I watched my father waste away into a human skeleton, and everyone in the family suffered the sadness, helplessness, and loss while we did our best to stay strong and smile for him. One of the things I can never forget is how he'd try to hide his pain at times to make us take care of ourselves. I don't wish that loss, or that struggle, on any family or individual.
My Story
Several years ago I lost my father to cancer. For as long as I can remember, near or far, I never worried about my father dying. At the time it seemed impossible, after all the worst I'd ever seen happen to him was a nose bleed. One May that all changed very suddenly, and less than a year later we were all saying a final goodbye. What I saw him go through I would never wish on anyone, much less a child and their family.
That is why this year, I am taking part in the Great Cycle Challenge to fight kids' cancer! Because right now, cancer is the biggest killer of children from disease in the United States. Over 15,700 children are diagnosed every year, and sadly, 38 children die of cancer every week.
I am raising funds through my challenge to support Children's Cancer Research Fund so they can continue their work developing treatments and someday a cure.
Please support me by making a donation to give these kids brighter futures.
Thank you.
