  • New bike and take time to stop and examine the wildlife
    12 Jun 2017

I'm fortunate that, in the past couple of weeks, I've seen red foxes, bucks and does, groundhogs, chipmunks, three different varieties of woodpeckers, and at least s dozen bird species. Unfortunately, I've not seen much of my favorite critters, turtles and snakes.

Yesterday did afford me the opportunity to visit with a friendly snake while learning to pilot a new recumbent. I picked up a used RANS Stratus 2-wheeled recumbent and couldn't be happier with both the bike and with my physical performance on said machine.

I suspect that my 300-mile goal will be met in short order now that I've a more comfortable and more suitable ride.

  • Rest days are important
    10 Jun 2017

The better half and I had tickets to see Four Voices: A Night with Joan Baez, The Indigo Girls, and Mary-Chapin Carpenter last night. Needless to say, there was no time to get in a ride after work. And tonight has turned into an impromptu rest day thanks to achy knees.

Tomorrow we're hitting up a local bike shop that has a large selection of recumbent bikes and trikes. I'm thinking it may be time to upgrade my ride. Fingers crossed I'll find what fits best and will make riding (and racking up miles) even more enjoyable.

In the meantime, rest and elevation and liniment and Astros baseball!

  • I didn't even think about weather issues
    6 Jun 2017

Just before I left work yesterday, my work computer displayed an alert describing incoming weather of wind gusts up to 30 mph and the chance of hail accumulations up to 1". Uhhhhh, no. I don't think I'll be cycling if there's the chance of being stuck out in a HAIL storm.

Unfortunately, the decision not to ride yesterday puts me 5 miles behind my mental weekly goal. There's the actual goal of cycling 10 miles per day for 30 days. Then, there's the reasonable goal of cycling 12 or 15 miles for six days and then having a rest day. Lastly, there's my mental goal of ride ALL THE MILES ASAP and bank up a super surplus to make up for going to a scooter rally for four days at the end of the month!

In reality, I can only do what my body is going to let me do. Some days, yeah, the body is sluggish and whiny but you know that, once you're out on the bike, you'll be glad and happy and things will go well. Other days...well, on those days you just have to bite back the self-aggravation and REST.

Today, however, I'm looking forward to a good, long, leisurely ride this evening along the green-canopied Little Miami Trail. And we'll see how far my body wants to go.

  • Why I'm participating in the Great Cycle Challenge
    1 Jun 2017

    Hey all,

I know many of you are wondering why I'm participating in this particular fundraiser. Once upon a time, I was a sick kid. No, not cancer, my issues were (and still are) neurological and orthopedic. But I remember all too well what it's like to be one of those kids in the hospital. It's lonely. It's frightening. And these kids are facing down their mortality EVERY. SINGLE. DAY.

Because every kid deserves a childhood, because every kid deserves to be healthy, my overweight, gimpy, arthritic, Guillain-Barre, spinal-stroke arse will be on the bike to help raise money for children's cancer research.

If you're able, please donate on my page at www.GreatCycleChallenge.com/riders/MistyAdams

Also, please be patient with my posts for the next month. I'll be sharing and cross-posting across all of my social media accounts.

    THANK YOU!

This June, I am taking part in the Great Cycle Challenge to fight kids' cancer!

Why? Because right now, cancer is the biggest killer of children from disease in the United States. Over 15,700 children are diagnosed every year, and sadly, 38 children die of cancer every week.

Kids should be living life, not fighting for it.

So I am raising funds through my challenge to help these kids and support Children’s Cancer Research Fund to allow them to continue their work to develop lifesaving treatments and find a cure for childhood cancer.

Please support me by making a donation to give these kids the brighter futures they deserve.

Your support will change little lives.

    Thank you.

    Misty
