My Story

20 Feb 2020

This June, I am taking part in the Great Cycle Challenge to fight kids' cancer!

Why? Because right now, cancer is the biggest killer of children from disease in the United States. Over 15,700 children are diagnosed every year, and sadly, 38 children die of cancer every week.

Kids should be living life, not fighting for it.

So I am raising funds through my challenge to help these kids and support Children's Cancer Research Fund to allow them to continue their work to develop lifesaving treatments and find a cure for childhood cancer.

Please support me by making a donation to give these kids the brighter futures they deserve.

Your support will change little lives.

Thank you.

  • Virtual Group Ride!
    27 Jun 2020

Many thanks to Sally Rech of Minnesota, who organized a virtual group ride that raised money for the Great Cycle Challenge. She made and sold t-shirts - modeled by yours truly - with the proceeds going to the Children's Cancer Research Fund.

Participants, which included my teammate Catherine Colquhoun, rode outdoors and in, and logged their mileage.

    Well done, everyone.

  • June is here!
    18 Jun 2020

So things didn't go exactly according as expected. The plan for March and April was to build strength and endurance, do a bunch of training rides, use May to shred miles, and then crush it in June. That all came crashing down in one week's time in the middle of March. Life as we know it changed, and suddenly, just going to the store became potentially lethal activity. Let's face it: living in the epicenter of the epicenter of a global pandemic stinks. In accordance, I made the painful decision not to ride the roads. I have found it to be too great a risk.

Fortunately, with the GCC postponed until September, I've had time to make adjustments. While I'm not on the pavement, I'm still on the road, at least virtually. Thanks to modern technology, I can still eat up miles and go places without leaving my basement. With my new smart trainer and virtual riding apps, I can explore the streets of London, Richmond, and many other places, and in the process log those miles I've pledged to do. There may not be wind in my ever-lengthening hair or asphalt under my tires, but there is air conditioning, lots of sweat, and plenty of pain.

So don't you worry. I'll be training all summer and ready to honor my miles come September. Just you wait!

  • New Goals
    7 Mar 2020

I'm stunned, and in the best way possible. Here it is, early March, 3 months before I can start logging miles, and I've already reached my primary fundraising goal. In fact, your generosity has kicked off the second stage of the challenge: adding miles.

Thanks to your incredible donations, my mileage goal has increased by 10 miles, and will continue to do so for every $100 raised from this point on.

Plus, I've earned a Great Cycle Challenge jersey, which I will wear on my June rides, making sure everyone knows why I'm out there. Thank you again, and let's keep the word going around!

  • Nearly there already!
    4 Mar 2020

It's a little more than a week into the fundraiser, and I'm only $33.26 shy of my $500 goal. I'm so grateful to everyone who has given so far.

Now the really hard work begins for me. How much beyond my goal can I raise in the next three months, and how many extra miles will I have to ride to match the donations? Only you know the answer.

Time to whip me into shape. The more you give, the more I ride...

  • Good to be back outdoors
    23 Feb 2020

Today was a beautiful, not-too-cold-for-February day, so I layered up my new thermal cycling gear and hit the road for my first ride of the season. A four lap tour of lovely Roosevelt Island, one of my favorite places, and I felt great. It sure beats being on the trainer in my basement. Going to get as many of those under my tires as I can between now and June, and my mileage goal should be a breeze.

  • Fundraising incentive
    22 Feb 2020

    Want to see me suffer?

For cyclists, that's actually a goal. Suffering on the bike is what makes us stronger and better the next time we get in the saddle.

So, here's my offer to you - for every $100 donated over my personal target, I'll add another 10 miles onto my goal for the month. That's another 50 miles for every additional $500.

Go ahead, make me suffer. I dare you!

  • Kicking off fundraising!
    20 Feb 2020

June feels like a long way away, but committing to riding regularly is essential to reach and (hopefully) far exceed my goal. I'm spending these bleak mid-winter months training in the basement. My bike's on a stationary trainer, with me on it 3-4 days per week. Can't wait for the weather to improve enough to hit the road on the weekends!
