My Story

This June, I am taking part in the Great Cycle Challenge to fight kids' cancer!

Why? Because right now, cancer is the biggest killer of children from disease in the United States. Over 15,700 children are diagnosed every year, and sadly, 38 children die of cancer every week.

Kids should be living life, not fighting for it.

So I am raising funds through my challenge to help these kids and support Children's Cancer Research Fund to allow them to continue their work to develop lifesaving treatments and find a cure for childhood cancer.

Please support me by making a donation to give these kids the brighter futures they deserve.

Your support will change little lives.

Thank you.

Today I rode on the same beautiful trail. Took some photos, however tonight I am sharing something more precious.

Olivia, the Princess that I am riding for, who happens to live (two streets, 300 feet) from me loves Minnie Mouse. I was able to obtain some Minnie stickers and tonight, she decorated my helmet with everything but Minnie Mouse. She is keeping the Minnie Mouse stickers for herself.

Tonight, I introduce you to Princess Oliva and the best-looking bike helmet in the world.

Olivia is such a joy to be around. Her little brother is a bundle of energy, and her parents are two of the most wonderful people that I know.

I pray with all the faith that I can muster that Olivia will overcome and together, with her family “Kicks Cancers Butt!”

    SLOW DANCE

Have you ever watched kids on a merry-go-round?

Or listened to the rain slapping on the ground?

Ever followed a butterfly's erratic flight?

Or gazed at the sun into the fading night?

    You better slow down.

    Don't dance so fast.

    Time is short.

    The music won't last.

Do you run through each day on the fly?

When you ask, “How are you?”

    Do you hear the reply?

When the day is done, do you lie in your bed,

with the next hundred chores running through your head?

    You'd better slow down

    Don't dance so fast.

    Time is short

    The music won't last.

    Ever told your child,

    We'll do it tomorrow?

    And in your haste,

    Not see his sorrow?

Ever lost touch, let a good friendship die

    Cause you never had time

    To call and say,'Hi'

    You'd better slow down.

    Don't dance so fast.

    Time is short.

    The music won't last..

When you run so fast to get somewhere,

You miss half the fun of getting there.

When you worry and hurry through your day,

It is like an unopened gift....

    Thrown away.

    Life is not a race.

    Do take it slower

    Hear the music

    Before the song is over.

  • Day 17.... Evening Ride and Rain Out
    18 Jun 2019

Day 17 Great Cycle Challenge 2019

    383 miles complete 259 remain

It rained on me during the evening ride. After I got half soaked I decided call to it a day. Finished getting soaked going home...

I am going to repost my thoughts of one year ago...

This morning was overcast with a threat of rain in the forecast, at first I was disappointed that I would not see a stunning sunrise on the river, however my eyes were opened in a different way.

After I took this photo I began to once again peddle my way on the path and the thought hit me that even in our darkest hours, in our most troubling times somehow, someway there is a promise of a better day or experience.

My dad suffered from Alzheimer’s and it eventually took his life. But even in the worst times, he would come up with something that would crack me up. I know that he did not know or realize what he said or did, but a simple phrase or action would cause me to smile.

I look at the faces of the children that we are riding for and I see smiles and contentment. I know that there are moments that they want mom or dad to get the camera out of their face and let them have their quiet time. But through it all they somehow and someway give me the strength to carry on.

So to the children…... I THANK YOU.

  • Day 9... Sunday Morning.. Great Cycle Challenge USA ....
    9 Jun 2019

While riding today the lyrics of a song by the Hollies came to my mind.....

    The road is long,

    With many a winding turn.

That leads to who knows where,

    who knows where...

As the lyrics passed through I thought of the kids that we are riding for. It is a long road with many winding turns and the outcome is unknown.

This whole challenge was started by a young girl who donated the money that she was saving for a bike that she would never ride. It has grown into this wonderful event. This is my 4th year of participation and I plan on doing so until I am physically unable to do so.

I want to thank all those who have donated to my effort. May you be blessed.

    Day 8

    177 miles completed 495 remain

It has been an interesting week... Last Saturday, day one I had an experience that brought a whole lot into focus and just how fragile life can be.

Day one was wonderful, morning ride was great. I came home, mowed the lawn, worked in the yard and then took off on an afternoon ride. The afternoon ride was a little warm but I went anyway because of a wedding reception that evening.

After the reception while we were returning to our vehicle, we had to climb a short but steep hill. After getting to the top of the hill and into the parking lot we ran into some friends who were just arriving. Stopping to talk to them I heard my wife say that the food was amazing. At that instant I felt extremely dizzy and I thought "Wow, I am dizzy I need to sit......"

Next thing I hear is someone calling me over and over. I opened my eyes and see the face of my friend Steve Hazlett and his wife Nicki. They were asking if I was okay which I thought strange because we were just talking... Then I asked Steve "Why am I on the ground?" It was then I found out that I had collapsed...

Thank you Steve and Nicki for being there and for all of your help.

Needless to say, the whole experience was totally surreal... Yes it scared all of us.... I am okay, but I have realized how fast things can change.

    People.... Stay hydrated.

I watched a video about Nathalia tonight and her dream to go to her prom. I watched through tear filled eyes as her friends made that happen. Each of us have our own reasons as to why we are riding in this event, and together we are a mighty team doing a great work together.

Work got in the way of my morning ride. (I'll have to speak to a supervisor about that.)

What an absolute peaceful evening. The river was beautiful. The other walkers and bikers on the trail were, as always happy and friendly, but when you are surrounded by beauty it hard not to be happy. Yesterday I saw an older gentleman on the trail sporting roller blades, and he was flat moving. His jersey said "Flying Fossil." I almost laughed myself into a bush... He was amazing.... I might have to try roller blades..

Keep peddling, and keep achieving your goals.

Long story short.... I am grateful for a tremendous surgeon. Thank you Dr. Lawton for putting me back together.

Thank you Jim Lewis from Mountainland Physical Therapy for helping/making me use the arm. I didn't know it could bend and stretch that far.
