My Story

30 May 2019

This Saturday it all begins! I'm riding in the Great Cycle Challenge again this year. This means I will be riding at least 80 miles during June to raise money to fight childhood cancer. This is my 3rd year riding in the event and I am planning to knock my previous mileage and fundraising goals out of the park.

Some of you have already donated this year, and I thank you. For those who are in a position to help financially, I would really appreciate it. If you can't, that's fine, too. I could still use some prayers for safe riding :)

  • Ride #4: Morning 15
    12 Jun 2019

I am part of a FB group of people over 50 who cycle. It's been a very supportive group through my most recent surgery and the last few months of mental health struggles. Sometimes (read "always") I can talk to strangers about personal things much easier than friends or family. Anyway, I love that group.

Yesterday, a woman posted on that page about her 14 mile round-trip ride to her doctor's appointment. It was an appointment with her cancer doctor and the first time she had been on her bike in 2 years. I have another friend through that group, Scott Davies, who uses biking as part of his cancer fight.

I'm lucky to not be fighting cancer, but biking is a familiar friend to me in another fight. It has 100% saved my life (literally and figuratively). Today's ride was dedicated to my fellow cyclists who are fighting cancer. Ride on, my brothers and sisters.

  • Ride #3: For M
    8 Jun 2019

Today’s ride was dedicated to a young man I met last week, M. He is a sweet 18 year old who I helped plan his first semester in college around his chemo treatment schedule. He was diagnosed with cancer when he was a sophomore in high school and anticipates he will be doing chemo for the next year and a half. He was a kind, appreciative young man and I look forward to working with him.

So, today’s ride was for M. I’m grateful for a body that is healthy enough to ride 44 miles while fighting a cross wind (😳). I hope M’s body will be that healthy one day.

  • Ride #2 but first on my new bike!
    4 Jun 2019

Today's ride was earlier and shorter than I normally like to do. But, I was so anxious to get on my NEW BIKE I just had to get out there and get 15 miles in. My thoughts during the ride this morning were with all those early mornings the docs, nurses, and all providers put in for children battling cancer. They each leave their homes and families for those early shifts that start before I'm even done with my 2nd cup of coffee. Thanks for all you all do to support and care for these children.

  • First ride of the challenge!
    3 Jun 2019

I had a great first ride of the challenge. My focus during my ride today was on the parents of children with cancer. As a mom of 6 and grandma of 2, I can't imagine the stress of helping your child through the struggle with cancer. All the hours sitting in the hospital must take an unbelievable toll on everyone. So, during my ride I focused on sending all the love and support I could to these parents. They need as much support as they can get. I pedaled for the parents today and I'm so grateful I can.
