My Story

16 May 2019

This June, I am taking part in the Great Cycle Challenge to fight kids' cancer! I'm looking for at least 50 people - family, friends, and even strangers, to donate 5 cents for every mile I ride during June. That's only $20, or about $1 every time I head out for a ride during the month. Can I count on you to partner with me?

Why am I doing this? Because right now, cancer is the biggest killer of children from disease in the United States. Over 15,700 children are diagnosed every year, and sadly, 38 children die of cancer every week.

Kids should be living life, not fighting for it.

So I am raising funds through my challenge to help these kids and support Children's Cancer Research Fund to allow them to continue their work to develop lifesaving treatments and find a cure for childhood cancer.

Please support me by making a donation to give these kids the brighter futures they deserve.

Your support will change little lives.

Thank you!

Mike

  • Done (Sort of)!
    1 Jul 2019

Finished the month with a 61-mile ride to exceed my 400-mile ride goal by 35 miles, coming in at 109%. On the other hand, I'm only at 29% of my fundraising goal. There is still time to help with that and I would appreciate any donation you can make, no matter the amount!

  • Quick Update - End of Week 1
    8 Jun 2019

It's 1:20 a.m. and I just finished a 21-miler; it's my third night ride this week. Sometimes my business and side gig schedules collide and the only time I can get out is after dark. I've had night rides in my quiver for a long time and I've got some great low-to-no traffic roads nearby.

I'm lit up like a Christmas tree, with a 600-lumen headlight, a 300-lumen helmet light, my two humongous flashing red LEDs and my reflective ankle bands. Two of this week's night have been cool enough to throw on a pair thin arm warmers. A gray and white urban camo print shows up well in headlights as well.

As day 7 ends, I'm at 26% on both my mileage and fundraising goal. I appreciate everyone that has contributed so far and those who will be contributing as the month progresses.

  • Split Ride
    4 Jun 2019

I left 45 minutes before sundown and finished 45 minutes after sundown. The earlier ride resulted in more car traffic in the dark but it was still very manageable. A little warmer than last night.

  • First Night Ride
    3 Jun 2019

I just got back from my first night ride of the year - a short 14 miles to close out the week and get Day 2 in the books. I left just before midnight so it would count for Sunday.

I love to ride at night and the neighborhoods around me provide a perfect setting with virtually no traffic and pretty good lighting.

If you're out after midnight and see some crazy guy on a bike it might be me! My headlight is usually in slow flash mode, I have TWO large 4-bulb flashing red LEDs facing the rear and have some reflective green bands on my ankles. You can't miss seeing me as I go by!

And if you cycle, come ride with me some night.

  • Challenge Starts Tomorrow!
    31 May 2019

Entering May, I only had 82 miles on the bike for the year. By the end of the day, I'll have just under 300 in the last three weeks so I'm primed and ready for 400 miles next month!

I picked up an inexpensive "backup" bike yesterday so that a mechanical issue on my regular bike won't slow me down on the way to hitting the goal.

There is still plenty of time to make a financial contribution to support this cause. And of course, prayers are always appreciated!

Watch for regular updates in June and stay abreast of OUR progress.

  • Joseph Lee
    29 May 2019

With the blessing of his parents, Bob & Joyce Lee, I dedicate the 2019 Challenge to Joseph Lee.

I first met Joseph Lee when he was a toddler. My wife & I were in the same Sunday School class at First Baptist Atlanta as Joseph's parents. Joseph was two years younger than our youngest daughter, who is the same age as Joseph's sister Rachel.

My wife & I later taught Sunday School in the Children's Ministry. I taught Joseph in the 5th grade & my wife taught him in the 6th grade.

We saw him fight through cancer the first time, as a child, and win. We saw him fight through cancer the second time, as a teenager, and win.

He went to work on his frail body and built it up, meeting the challenges of the police academy and becoming a Cobb County, GA police officer. He built it more, competing in bodybuilding competitions. And even more in his role as a security contractor in the Middle East.

Joseph succumbed to his 3rd & final bout with cancer a year ago.

    I ride for Joseph. #BeLikeLee
